Sales

June 2018 • Beachwood, OH

What I liked

The freedom of this job. And the ability to express my fashion sense.

What I wish was different

It is commission based so that’s a bit rough.

Advice

It’s retail. Not everyone is going to be nice to you and it’s a competitive feel. Don’t work here if you don’t have tough skin.

Rover/Sales Associate

July - September 2018 • Los Angeles, CA

What I liked

I like that I got to work in a number of different departments since I was a rover. My second month working there, I got to work in a pop up shop for Herschel so I was selling merchandise for a brand that I was very familiar with. I also met a lot of wonderful people during my time there.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have stayed there a little longer because I was really starting to enjoy my job and I wish that I was working a sales role that allowed me to make commission.

Advice

I would say that everyone should give retail a try sometime during their life. I was very opposed to the idea of working a retail job because I didn't think I would enjoy it, and I only took the job because I was looking for a summer job and it was the one that got back to me the fastest, but it taught me a lot of skills I wouldn't have gained otherwise and a very memorable experience as well.

Put the customer first.

Cashier

July - August 2018 • Portland, OR

What I liked

I enjoyed working in a large corporation with a lot of structure and strong company culture. My coworkers were very friendly and my manager gave me great feedback.

What I wish was different

My manager was not often present, and always absent when there was an emergency. The rest of us did not feel prepared to deal with an emergency.

Advice

Don't underestimate the importance of friendly coworkers. Plus, as most students do not have a lot of experience, looking for jobs that train their employees thoroughly is something to take into consideration.

Customer Service Representative Intern

June - August 2018 • Peabody, MA

What I liked

Nordstrom offers a completely transparent work environment where you will always have the ability to ask questions, receive suggestions to improve your work performance, and be in the know regarding ways to work “up the ladder” in the company regarding other positions and possible promotions. While I do not intend to move further in the field of customer relations (I had previously worked at Nordstrom solely as a summer job and was then offered this position, which I took as I was abroad the months prior and was looking to work when I returned home to the States) I would absolutely recommend this company as a posible employer for anyone interested in media, marketing, communications, and/or customer relations/service.

What I wish was different

Better guidance regarding the possibly to transfer to another location, or how to possibly continue working a full-time or part-time position after the summer ended

Advice

Do not be afraid to ask questions! Nordstrom is an entirely open company that has an “open door” policy, meaning any and everyone will be available to answer any questions or doubts you may have. Communicating efficiently and frequently with your management is your best resource to get ahead in the position and acclimate yourself quickly to the work environment.

Retail Sales Intern

June - August 2018 • Walnut Creek, CA

What I liked

I enjoyed working in a retail setting and getting to supervise the many elements that go into managing a department in a major retail store.

What I wish was different

I think there should have been more corporate training!

Advice

Everything is temporary & always ask what you can do to achieve your next role.

Logistics

December 2016 • Beachwood, OH

What I liked

Nordstrom has a reputation of creating a family environment for their employees and customers. The environment was the best part. Everyone was willing to help out the logistics team during holidays.

What I wish was different

The hours were hard to get through. Logistics is a fast paced job and one would have to travel around the whole Nordstrom store to complete the job. The Nordstrom store is three stories so imagine doing an 8 hour job, running around a department store. It was exhausting.

Advice

Get to know everyone in every department and help out. Employees appreciate when other teams help them get through their shift. Team work is not limited to logistics, it goes to the sales floor.
