What I liked

Meeting the other people. Most of my coworkers were other college students/recent grads.

What I wish was different

It’s very fast-paced and draining work sometimes with little time to re-energize. Sometimes you feel treated like a number. And help isn’t always timely as you need it to be.

Advice

Talk with your coworkers about receiving help and support when you need it

Retail Management Intern

June - August 2018 • Las Vegas, NV

What I liked

I liked the hands-on experience about the retail industry that I gained through completing Nordstrom's Retail Management Internship program. I learned not only about how to sell product and merchandise the sales floor but also how to lead a team and do other managerial tasks.

What I wish was different

I did not like how the job required me to work on weekends and additionally the amount of physical work that was required. I had to stand for around 8 hours each day which I was not accustomed to doing.

Advice

I would be aware that the internship program is not very flexible, making it hard to do other things during the summer such as taking online classes or vacations, etc.

Sales

May - August 2018 • Bellevue, WA

What I liked

I loved the experience of working in sales, and the initial training and hiring progress

What I wish was different

I wish there would have been more communications about my options during the interview, and more of the logistic stuff would have been in writing, such as amount of weekly hours agreed upon etc. Since these were not kept in mind much, also it is not permitted to take any day off the schedule, even if one is only in a part time position.

Advice

Make sure to go into it , having researched the different teams as much as possible, and know what department you definitely do not want to be in. teams are separated by departments, and they can make or break the experience

Advice

Long-time employees will not help you; the commission-based sales create an unhealthy, competitive atmosphere where every man or woman is for him or herself.

Working along side a great team of coworkers. Everyone who I worked with was extremely kind and fun to be around, even when the job got difficult and tedious.

Salesperson

June - August 2018 • Novi, MI

What I liked

I got along well with my coworkers, which always good. This job was also the highest paying job that I've had (we had a 10/hr base pay but usually made commission off of our sales), so it was great to be able to save some money that I could put towards tuition for this year (and have a bit more spending money throughout this semester). The employee discount was also very nice.

What I wish was different

Working commission is, as my father puts it, a blood sport. It forces passive-aggressive competition, especially among employees that were making their living there.

Advice

I truly think it can be beneficial to put down the "I need to get a great internship over the summer" hat and recognize that working retail or food service can be very useful over the summer as well. These jobs often pay more (especially since many internships nowadays are unpaid) and provide great experience in how to deal formally with the public and with unhappy customers. I truly believe everyone should work customer service at least once in their life.

What I wish was different

Nothing my experience was amazing I would suggest this job to anyone!
