Environmental Reporter

The Las Vegas Sun, Nevada’s only Pulitzer Prize-winning newspaper, seeks an Environmental Reporter to lead our coverage of the water crisis in the West.

The West is in the midst of a two-decade drought that is leaving less water flowing through the Colorado River and has depleted the reservoirs that store it. The drought-starved reservoir on the Colorado River behind the Hoover Dam has become so depleted that Las Vegas is now pumping water from deeper within Lake Mead, where water levels have dropped so much that a water intake has become visible.

We’re looking for a reporter who is a curious researcher and resourceful investigator. They must have a general understanding of public affairs and government relations.

We want a storyteller who enjoys breaking down complex issues for consumption, and who desires becoming the leading authority on the water crisis in the Las Vegas market.

Our ideal candidate will be a highly resourceful team player ready to work in our collaborative environment, be extremely effective while working independently, and able to identify compelling stories. You must also have experience filing public records requests.

The successful candidate must be capable at writing longform narratives as well as covering breaking news with speed and accuracy. You’ll produce daily as well as mid- and longer-range enterprise stories.

The Las Vegas Sun is a product of Greenspun Media Group, a family-owned organization whose titles also include: Las Vegas Weekly; a group of leading websites, including award-winning LasVegasSun.com and VegasInc.com, the valley’s leading business publication; and Las Vegas Magazine, which is distributed in most of the hotel rooms on the Las Vegas Strip. We’re building a media company for the next 50 years, and we take pride in the quality and progressive nature of our work. The Las Vegas Sun won the Pulitzer Prize for Public Service in 2009, and GMG’s sites have won EPPY Awards in four of the past five years.
