Program Coordinator

 

America’s #1 conservation service organization seeks a Program Coordinator at our Adirondack Corps Program. The Student Conservation Association (SCA), a national force of conservation volunteers, has an exciting opportunity in our New York Residential Corps Program.

 

Position Title: Program Coordinator

Salary: $52,000 - $55,000 annually 

Position Type: Full-Time Permanent, Exempt

Housing: Optional housing provided on site (see additional detail below)

Location: Long Lake, NY (William C Whitney Headquarters)

For 25 years, the SCA Adirondack Corps has been a vital force in preserving the Adirondack Park's natural beauty. This program empowers young adults to become the next generation of conservation leaders. Funded through a partnership between the SCA, AmeriCorps, and the New York State DEC, the program allows young adults to serve their country through hands-on conservation projects.

Beyond the immediate benefits of these projects, the Adirondack Corps program equips participants with valuable skills for future conservation careers. Through nationally recognized training and real-world experience in backcountry settings, participants gain expertise in areas like trail construction, invasive species management, and project leadership. The SCA Adirondack Corps is more than just a conservation program; it's an investment in the future. By nurturing the next generation of conservation leaders, the program ensures the Adirondack Park's continued health and beauty for generations to come.

 

Position Summary:

 

The role of a Program Coordinator is a dynamic and multifaceted position, essential for the smooth operation of the Adirondack Corps' summer program. From spearheading the recruitment process to ensuring the safety and compliance of all members, the Coordinator is the linchpin that holds the program together. They are responsible for the meticulous planning and execution of AmeriCorps member orientations, the management of program facilities and logistical needs, and the supervision of daily activities. Additionally, the Coordinator plays a crucial role in facilitating risk management protocols, incident response, and the development of performance plans, all while maintaining a keen eye on the program's logistical needs. This position is not just about managing resources but also about nurturing the growth and development of our AmeriCorps members, making it a truly rewarding experience.

 

Primary Responsibilities:


Program Planning & Delivery:

 

  • Lead recruitment and onboarding for Adirondack Corps' summer and winter crews.
  • Organize and conduct orientation for new summer crew members.
  • Supervise Corps members daily with the Program Field Specialist.
  • Uphold SCA safety standards and coordinate with Risk Management.
  • Ensure member compliance with SCA, AmeriCorps, and partner policies.
  • Complete evaluation of members at the mid-season and end of program year;
  • Oversee overall operations of the residential facilities, providing necessary supplies for the member housing, office space, vehicles, and shared kitchen space;
  • Manage ordering, inventory and budgeting of food, equipment, and necessary facility supplies;
  • Oversee status, needs and condition of program vehicle fleet;
  • Perform additional responsibilities as delegated by the Program Manager.

 

Program Growth:

 

  • Actively maintain and build upon relevant skills and certifications;
  • Role model SCA mission and values to members and program partners;
  • Promote leadership development within team;
  • Responsible for modeling, facilitating, and building an inclusive community:
    • Lead programs in alignment with SCA Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI) policies and SCA Core Values.
    • Participation in JEDI trainings and professional development opportunities.
    • Help recruit, hire, and train members of BIPOC identifying as well as diverse backgrounds.
    • Lead programs/training that facilitate Social and Emotional Development among ADK Corps members.
  • Assist Program Manager in building relationships with community organizations and land partners on a local level.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Excellent communication skills needed
  • Valid driver’s license and MVR that meets SCA standards required
  • 1 - 2 years of progressively responsible experience including skills related to the position
  • Minimum of 21 years of age
  • Proven organizational and program development skills
  • Ability to live on site for up to a week at a time in provided housing during critical periods of the season.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including effective use of Microsoft Word, Excel, Microsoft Teams, Outlook, and SharePoint.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous trail construction and maintenance experience preferred
  • Prior experience supervising young adults in an outdoor setting.
  • Experience with salesforce lightning (preferred)
  • Community organizing skills and strong capacity to work in a team.
  • Wilderness First Responder or higher/ CPR certification. (Preferred with opportunities to obtain through the SCA)
  • Experience working as or managing AmeriCorps Members
  • Proven ability to organize and inventory large quantities of supplies and materials.

 

Housing: Optional housing is available onsite at the William C Whitney Headquarters. The Program coordinator has the option to live year-round in one of our staff houses on Little Tupper Lake. Houses include 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, full kitchen and large living space. This housing would be shared seasonally May-October with seasonal crew leaders.
