Job Description and Duties

You can have an impact by working collaboratively to help fulfill the Department of Fish and Wildlife's mission. The Department of Fish and Wildlife's Northern Region is seeking a motivated individual to work as an Environmental Services Intern out of the Yreka office in Siskiyou County. Under supervision of the Senior Environmental Scientist (Supervisory), the incumbent performs the following duties to implement elk research activities and to assist with collection and analyses of biological data.
Data Analysis and Reports: Assist with the summary of survey data to estimate abundance, occupancy, and trends in elk populations. Analyze collar data to provide information regarding elk habitat utilization and movement adjacent to roadways. Assist with the preparation of project reports and publications describing project results.
Data Management: Enter information collected during surveys into databases and check for errors.
Wildlife Surveys: Conduct ground-based surveys to document the distribution of elk and to count their numbers and estimate herd sizes. This includes road surveys, ground support for aerial surveys, use of camera traps, collection of fecal pellets for DNA analysis, and the use of handheld telemetry equipment.
Disease Monitoring: Collect samples from hunter-harvested elk and roadkill. Visually inspect samples and prepare samples for histology. Assist with targeted surveillance for treponeme-associated hoof disease.
Wildlife Captures and Necropsies: Record information about captured elk on data sheets and assist with the processing of captured animals. Assist with necropsies and sample collection for mortalities.

Working Conditions
Must be willing to work long, irregular hours, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, holidays and to travel performing field work throughout the State; willingness to do routine work in order to learn; interest in and aptitude in the work; willingness to wear a uniform. Ability to use a computer keyboard in a sitting/standing position several hours a day. Must attend occasional meetings. Field activities may involve strenuous physical activity in variable weather conditions while carrying heavy loads. Possession of a valid Driver’s License is required.
Special Equipment Required: Daily = 4-wheel drive vehicle, GPS, satellite communicator/emergency locator, specialty field survey equipment.
