Communications Intern

INTERNSHIP START / END DATES

August 5, 2024 – November 4, 2024 (start and finish dates are flexible based on successful applicants' school or work schedule)

Candidate MUST be available for the following events: South Point 400 NASCAR Weekend (October 14 - 20 2024) and NHRA Nevada Nationals (October 31 – November 3, 2024).

JOB SUMMARY

Las Vegas Motor Speedway is seeking a Communications Intern to support the overall communication strategies for all fall events at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The ideal candidate must have a strong desire to work in the motorsports industry, be confident, driven, willing to learn and have a passion for marketing and storytelling. During the internship, the intern will be allowed to develop and apply skills in various areas, including but not limited to media relations, social media, marketing, and event management. 

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist the Communications department with race day needs, office duties, and special projects
  • Responsible for race and event day operational duties, including making copies, press box set-up, broadcast booth set-up and break-down, statistical information, daily clips, etc.
  • Assist in the coordination of local TV, radio outlets, and special guests in accessing racetrack
  • Assist the communications department with non-racing events as needed
  • Support the communications team with the management of projects and ensuring deadlines are met
  • Assist with the pre-and event day planning and execution
  • Maintain and prepare media centers for any race events
  • Leverage existing media relationships and cultivate new contacts within industry and local market media
  • Assist in conducting interviews with drivers while collecting any quotes needed for press releases
  • Assist in writing and editing press releases, media advisories & media pitches as well as various other press materials
  • Research and find compelling human-interest stories to promote through various mediums
  • Build and maintain media lists for event markets
  • Handle incoming press requests with guidance from the senior staff
  • Support other departments as assigned

CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS

  • Candidate must be enrolled in a Bachelor's or Master’s degree program to be able to receive course credit
  • Candidate must have a background in Marketing, Public Relations/Communications, Sports Management, or other relevant experience, education, and/or training
  • Candidate must possess excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Candidate must thrive in fast-paced environments, be a hands-on team player who can also handle independent projects
  • Candidate must be able to multi-task, be extremely detail-oriented, and complete projects in a timely manner, often under tight deadlines
  • Candidate must have knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook
  • Candidate must be able to work event days, evenings, and weekends as required, including commuting to and from the office in North Las Vegas.
  • Knowledge of motorsports is a plus but not required
  • Candidate must be able to maintain confidential information to themselves

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS 

  • Ability to work early mornings during event weekends
  • Ability to work outside 
  • Ability to lift objects up to 50 pounds, i.e., tents, tables, stakes, and signage 
  • Ability to safely operate a golf cart
  • Ability to stand and move around on foot for extended periods of time
  • Ability to speak publicly 

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

  • This is an unpaid educational internship
  • Knowledge of working in the front office of a professional sports venue
  • Candidate will receive LVMS-branded staff uniforms, including shirts, hats, and polos
  • College Credit
