Director of Finance & Business

Job Title: Director of Finance & Business

Building/Department: Administrative Office

Reports to: Superintendent

Summary:

The Director of Finance and Business oversees and directs all aspects of finance and business services within the District. This role encompasses financial planning, budgeting, general accounting, financial reporting, payroll management, cash management, employee benefits administration, and insurance claims management. The Director ensures the smooth, efficient, and accurate operation of the Business Office to maximize its positive impact on the educational system, contributing effectively to the overall educational process.

 

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting.
  • Possession of, qualification for, or willingness to obtain the Michigan School Business Officials Chief Financial Officer Certification.
  • Minimum of two to three (2-3) years of practical experience in the accounting field, including at least one year in a supervisory role.
  • Proficiency in the operation of computerized financial accounting systems.
  • Excellent communication (oral, written, and listening) and interpersonal skills to maintain effective relationships with stakeholders, including board members, administrators, teachers, support staff, and community members/legal professionals.
  • Strong organizational and leadership abilities.
  • CPA designation (preferred).
  • Master’s Degree in Educational Administration, Finance, or a related field (preferred).
  • Minimum of four to five (4-5) years of practical experience in the accounting field, including at least one year in a supervisory capacity (preferred).
  • Experience in school financial management, governmental accounting, or nonprofit accounting (preferred).
  • Previous involvement in union collective bargaining and labor relations (preferred).
  • Demonstrated integrity, dependability, and proficiency in data analysis (preferred).
  • Familiarity with Skyward software (preferred).

 

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

(These duties and responsibilities are judged to be "essential functions" in terms of the Americans with Disabilities Act or ADA)

  • Oversee all accounting functions, including accounts payable, purchasing, payroll, grant accounting, district revenues, bond finances, and general accounting operations.
  • Collaborate with the Superintendent to develop both current operational and long-range budgets to meet the educational needs of the district.
  • Maintain and report on long and short-term cash flow activities to the Superintendent.
  • Ensure proper record-keeping to safeguard district funds, maintain accurate property accounts, and provide timely financial reports to the Superintendent and Board of Education.
  • Supervise activity fund accounts, ensuring adherence to procedures for receipt documentation, check issuance, monthly balance reporting, and annual reconciliation.
  • Conduct year-end audits and state reporting (FID), along with all necessary business reports required for state and federal purposes.
  • Provide leadership and oversight for the annual financial audit of the district.
  • Coordinate the annual appraisal of district buildings and movable equipment.
  • Administer employee insurance plans and manage reporting for workers’ compensation and unemployment claims.
  • Manage the district’s insurance programs, covering property & casualty, liability, workers’ compensation, and unemployment.
  • Direct the District’s budget development and process for Federal and State grants.
  • Collaborate with the Curriculum Department to develop and monitor the district’s funding related to State and Federal grants and other external funding programs.
  • Assist in labor contract negotiations by providing necessary financial data to the negotiating team(s) under the direction of the Superintendent.
  • Attend and provide financial reports at regular or special board meetings, board work sessions, and board committee meetings.
  • Supervise Business Office personnel to ensure efficient operation and adherence to financial policies and procedures.
  • Perform any additional duties as assigned
  • Maintain a consistent and reliable on-site work schedule

  • Reasoning Ability: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to identify issues, evaluate alternatives, and make sound financial decisions.Ability to think critically and strategically, considering the implications of financial choices on organizational objectives.

 

  • Other Skills & Abilities: Excellent organizational and time management skills to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.Effective leadership and team-building abilities to motivate and guide staff in achieving departmental goals. Proficiency in using financial software systems and computerized accounting tools. Attention to detail and accuracy in maintaining financial records and preparing reports. Adaptability and flexibility to navigate changes in financial regulations, policies, and procedures. Commitment to professional development and staying updated on industry trends and best practices in finance and accounting.

FLSA Status:

This is an Exempt FLSA position. Exempt employees are not eligible for overtime pay under the Fair Labor Standards Act.

Additional Information:

  • Compensation and Benefits: Competitive salary ($110,000-$115,000 based on experience and level of education)  and benefits package.
  • Schedule: 12 Month position
