Job Description and Duties

The Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW), Inland Deserts Region has an exciting opportunity for an outgoing, independent, and highly motivated Senior Environmental Scientist (Specialist) - Limited Term to serve as an integral part of a team implementing the Habitat Conservation Planning Program. This position will perform duties related to Lake and Streambed Alteration, California Endangered Species Act, and other functions of the Habitat Conservation Program throughout Region 6. We are looking for somebody that has a comprehensive knowledge and interest in applying CDFW's mission to manage fish and wildlife resources.

Under general direction, the Senior Environmental Scientist (Specialist) will work with California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), review track and review Caltrans’ mitigation compliance for California Endangered Species Act, Lake or Streambed Alteration obligations. This includes completing reviews and facilitating CDFW approval of Habitat Mitigation Lands Acquisition packages and mitigation banking receipts. Specified activities require knowledge of California fish and wildlife resources, ecological principles, lake and stream processes and permitting and California environmental laws.

This position is 12 months Limited Term (LT) and may be extended up to 24 months or become permanent.

If you currently have permanent status in your position and have passed probation, you have mandatory reinstatement rights into your former position at the end of this LT appointment. If you have not had prior permanent or probationary civil service status, you will be separated from State service.

Working Conditions

Ability to use a computer keyboard and Microsoft Office software up to eight hours each day; complete office tasks (partial telework may be available for this position) that require sitting, standing, and walking to other locations; participate in and coordinate meetings and conference calls. Travel (reimbursable) and fieldwork is required. Attendance at site visits, meetings, and internal/external trainings in all five counties in the Region, Sacramento, or throughout the State may require occasional overnight travel (reimbursable) of two or more days per week to reach some meeting, project, or site locations. Fieldwork may include operating a 4-wheel-drive state vehicle, driving a fleet vehicle several hours each way, and/or hiking long distances over uneven and possibly steep or wet terrain at project sites. Willingness to work long hours, sometimes including early mornings, late nights, and weekends. Operate 4-wheel-drive vehicles, project equipment, machinery, digital equipment, computers, and lab equipment.

This position is required to be in office one day per week and two additional days per month with the option to telework the remainder of the time as duties allow and with supervisor approval.

This position will be located at the Ontario Region 6 Office.
