Job Description and Duties

Join the Sierra Fisheries program and be part of a team of fisheries and amphibian biologists, assisting with our fisheries assessments throughout the North Central Region. Successful applicants will be spending their summer surveying recreational anglers at multiple lakes, streams, and reservoirs, electrofishing, snorkeling, and collecting biological fisheries data to help monitor the status of our fisheries and inform management decisions.

Under the supervision of the Senior Environmental Scientist (Supervisor) for the Sierra Fisheries Program, the incumbent will assist in field-based surveys to assess and monitor the status of hatchery and wild fish populations and their habitats.

Additionally, the successful candidate will:

- Collect recreational fishery data and biological samples at public launch ramps, docks, piers, jetties and beach/banks sites using standardized survey protocols.

- Identify finfish and invertebrates to species and collects fish lengths, weights and other biological data as needed.

- Assist with field-based fisheries assessments of wild trout populations including electrofishing, snorkeling, angling, collection of scales and genetic tissue, gill netting.

- Rigorously follow standardized aquatic survey protocols for a variety of fisheries recovery and monitoring projects.

- Record data clearly and comprehensively.

- Coordinate with project leads, other seasonal employees, and volunteers to ensure complete and timely project implementation.

- Enter data into computer systems and assist with data analysis, reporting, presentation, archiving, and manuscript preparation using Microsoft Office programs.
 

The Fish and Wildlife Scientific Aid classification is a non-testing classification.

Working Conditions

Travel to and from Rancho Cordova and field locations including driving on unpaved roads and hiking in the mountains. Field surveys will require working in swift water including swimming, wading, and boating (jet boats, kayaks, and pontoon boats). Cold water conditions may require the use of wetsuits.

Office space will be provided at the Rancho Cordova office for entering and conducting quality assurance checking for data collected during surveys.

Work requires extended hours in the field (4-5 days), strenuous physical activities (hiking using GPS navigation, pulling nets, carrying equipment), and overnight camping.

This position requires the possession of a valid class C Driver's License.
