End Date: August 20, 2024

Hours Weekly: Approximately 20

Location: Los Angeles, CA

As part of the This Is Science with Jess Phoenix production team, you’ll be working with one of the nation’s foremost 501(c)3 nonprofit scientific analysis and advocacy organizations. Our mission is to use rigorous, independent science to solve our planet’s most pressing problems. Joining with people across the country, we combine technical analysis and effective advocacy to create innovative, practical solutions for a healthy, safe, and sustainable future.

The Union of Concerned Scientists is active in several scientific areas:

  • We combat climate change and seek to alleviate harm caused by the heat, sea level rise, and other consequences of runaway emissions
  • We strive to develop sustainable ways to feed, power, and transport ourselves
  • We work to reduce the existential threat of nuclear war
  • We fight back when powerful corporations or special interests mislead the public on science
  • We ensure our solutions advance racial and economic equity

As part of the This Is Science with Jess Phoenix production team, you will be engaged with creating and marketing UCS’s official podcast, YouTube channel, and social media content. Host Jess Phoenix is UCS’s Science Ambassador and an internationally-known volcanologist, author, and science communicator. You will work directly with Jess and the rest of the TISWJP team  to produce the best possible content for our audience and then promote it to key audiences. The podcast is biweekly and reaches UCS supporters, members of the UCS Science Network, and members of the public with interests in science and activism.

During your internship, you'll get the opportunity to hone your multimedia production and social media marketing skills for an organization using science to make meaningful, evidence-based change, learning new things, and meeting new people every week.

  • You will be completely immersed in the media production process covering all types of duties, including but not limited to: creative and concept development, writing, pre-production, filming/recording, research, and video/audio editing.
  • You'll be assisting with the actual work, helping to get the podcast, videos, and social media content created, assembled, and pushed out to the world.
  • You'll help to develop compelling social media assets to drive engagement with a strong strategic foundation and sharp copy.
  • You'll help to ensure our podcast and videos will look and sound polished and be scientifically accurate by assisting with pre-production, post-production, and filming/recording on-location throughout Southern California.
  • You will brainstorm and implement other ideas to grow podcast listenership.

Requirements

  • Understanding of and fluency with digital and social media (Podcast platforms, YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter/X, etc.)

  • Proficient in Adobe Creative Cloud suite (particularly Audition, Premiere Pro, After Effects, Photoshop, Illustrator)
  • Interest in science, environmental conservation, racial and economic equity
  • Ability to work in-person in Los Angeles, California
  • Willingness to record/film outdoors in inclement weather and rugged terrain
  • Filming/recording and editing experience strongly desired
  • Production Assistant and on set experience a plus, but not required

UCS is an equal opportunity employer continually seeking to diversify its staff. In particular, we’re dedicated to broadening opportunities for individuals from demographic groups that are historically underrepresented in the sciences and in environmental advocacy. We’re also committed to building an inclusive workplace culture where talented people of widely diverse backgrounds can thrive. We've adopted this commitment because we believe the inclusion of culturally diverse perspectives will improve our work and produce better societal and environmental outcomes for all, including historically disenfranchised communities. We are actively seeking candidates who bring diverse backgrounds and perspectives to join us in this work.
