Position Title: Youth Program Coordinator (Internship)

Position Type: In-person, office and in the field setting; occasional weekend hours as scheduled (specifically June 8 and 15), 1-2 overnights camping with youth may be required. This position is not eligible for telework or overtime hours.

Position Duration: 14 weeks; May-August 2024; Entry of duty by Tuesday, May 28 and through Friday, August 23, 2024. Exact dates are flexible. You must be available to work no later than Tuesday, May 28, 2024. The youth program begins June 8, 2024.

Overview of the Position:
The Youth Program Coordinator will serve as the primary lead for the National Parks of Boston Youth Employment & Development Program, Storytellers in Parks. This role is responsible for planning, implementing, and evaluating daily programming while guiding and mentoring youth, aged 15-18, to learn and explore the history of the parks through mixed media arts. By the end of the program, youth will have developed their own portfolio showcasing a variety of historical research through their projects.

About Storytellers in Parks Youth Program

Storytellers in Parks explores Boston’s hidden histories and diverse communities through art and storytelling. Youth artists dive into mixed media, emphasizing historical research, and spotlighting narratives within Boston’s National Parks. Through hands-on projects, they uncover untold stories, capturing the essence of the parks and enriching Boston’s vibrant history.

Youth Program Goals:

• To uncover and document lesser-known aspects of Boston’s history and communities, ensuring that these narratives are preserved and shared for future generations.
• To engage youth in historical research and storytelling, encouraging them to develop critical thinking skills, and gain a deeper understanding of local history.
• To facilitate the artistic growth and development of youth participants by working alongside artists and historians (technical experts) to develop hands-on art projects, explore a variety of art mediums, and conduct historical research.

Duties & Responsibilities:

• Facilitate age-appropriate instruction to guide and mentor youth to prepare, motivate, and engage in projects and activities. (50% of time)
• Communicate effectively and collaborate with technical exerts (i.e., artists, guest speakers) and park colleagues to identify appropriate projects for youth.  (30% of time)
• Track and revise, as needed, project plans and logistics among park sites, either in the field or in an office setting, while evaluating program successes and challenges. (10% of time)
• Assist and support maintenance and development of park website presence for youth and contribute to social media platforms. (5% of time)
• As time and workload allows, provide additional support for National Parks of Boston and partner youth initiatives. (5% of time)
