Psychiatric Technician Trainee - SHN

State Hospital North (SHN) is filling Psychiatric Technician Trainee positions. SHN is a modern 55-bed adult psychiatric hospital located in the beautiful mountains of North Central Idaho. You will enjoy working with our friendly, dedicated and professional staff. 

* This is a trainee level position. When training is satisfactorily completed, the employee may be eligible for a promotion to Psychiatric Technician. 

* Employees may be required to work weekends, holidays, day, evening and night shifts (swing or night shifts include 5% shift pay).
 

 

The Idaho Department of Health & Welfare is a drug-free workplace. Any applicant offered employment in this position at the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare will be required to pass a pre-employment drug test. In addition, successful candidates will be required to complete a criminal history background investigation. Employment is dependent upon satisfactory results of the investigation.  

This announcement may be used to fill full-time and temporary positions. Temporary positions are limited to working 1,385 hours in a 12-month period for any one state agency. Employees are eligible for benefits if they work twenty (20) hours or more per week and the term of employment is expected to exceed five (5) continuous months. 

This is an ongoing announcement which means at the time applicants apply, we may or may not have an opening. Those applicants that take and pass the exam to show they meet the minimum qualifications will be placed on the referral list. When a position becomes available, the hiring supervisor will then directly contact those applicants they wish to interview off the referral list.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES:

 

  • Provide personal care for patients.
  • Provide group and/or individual services in psychosocial treatment, disturbed behavior management, record keeping, environmental management, and patient care.
  • Maintain the safety of patients/residents, including involvement in emergencies such as fire evacuations.
  • Interact with patients/residents to encourage appropriate behavior and to control aggressive behavior.
  • Interact with patients/residents to provide social skills training in areas such as: social interaction; leisure time activity; planning and decision making; and money management.
  • Take, record, and report vital signs, sleep patterns, and diet patterns.
  • Identify and report changes in patients/residents behavior and health.
  • Lift and transfer patients/residents; lift and carry items weighing approximately 50 pounds.
  • Monitor and assess safety and security of clients and facilities within their environment, and take action in crisis situations.
  • Maintain the environment by performing basic housekeeping duties. 
     

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

You must possess all the minimum qualifications below to pass the exam for this position.   • Some knowledge of personal hygiene and first aid. Typically requires at least two months of experience performing these functions OR a willingness to learn them.
  • Experience following written and oral instructions. Typically requires at least six months of experience.
  • Ability to read and write in English.
