Job Description

Position Description:

Patient Care Associates (PCAs) work under the direction of a licensed nurse or other medical staff to provide patients with care and support. PCAs perform venipuncture, finger-sticks, HIV Pre and Post Test Counseling, Rapid HIV Testing, responding and assisting with emergencies, various clerical and health-related duties associated with patient care, ADLs, and contributing to the safety, care, and comfort of patients.

Preferred Skills:

  1. A four-year high school diploma or equivalent (GED) required
  2. NYS Department of Health phlebotomy training program
  3. Patient Care Associate with EKG Certification
  4. BCLS Certification and Computer Competency required
  5. HIV Pre and Post Test Counseling training/certification

Detailed Tasks:

  1. Administer total care (bed bath, partial or complete)
  2. Assist with patient’s personal hygiene – including skin care, mouth care, shaving, etc.
  3. Transfers patients – in and out of bed, stretcher, and wheelchair.
  4. Positions patients and carry out a range of motion exercise
  5. Prepares patients for meals and assists with feeding as needed
  6. Assists with unit admission and transfer of patient
  7. Takes and documents in the electronic medical record all patient’s vital signs – B/P, TPR, weights, intake, and output
  8. Perform EKGs as required and follow outlined procedures for submitting abnormal EKGs
  9. Perform dry sterile dressing changes and assists with other patient treatment
  10. Administers hot and cold applications to patients, under supervision
  11. Perform blood draws and urine testing
  12. Chaperon staff in all clinical areas when requested

 

Minimum Qualifications

  1. High school diploma or its educational equivalent, approved by a State’s Department of Education or a recognized accrediting organization; and
  2. Successful completion of a NYS Department of Health prescribed training program for Phlebotomy, satisfactory to the Laboratory Director; and
  3. Completion of a health care setting-based training program in the performance of electrocardiographs and basic life support procedures including certification in Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation.

Special Note:

In addition to meeting the qualifications above, assignment to a long-term care facility requires a New York State Nurse’s Aide Certificate.
