Position Summary

HLTH 297-Global Wellness Explorations

This course teaches the dimensions of health and wellness through a global lens, where students compare Western health alongside other cultures of health across the globe; students will learn various wellness practices rooted in the Blue Zones research; focus on stress management, nutrition, movement, and chronic disease risk. If students so choose, they can use this class to prepare for the SESF study abroad trip in Costa Rica, spring of 2024.

Pay, Benefits & Work Schedule

Adjunct Professor is typically assigned as needed on a quarterly basis, with no expectation of continued employment beyond the current appointment.

Quarterly remuneration for 5-credit lecture class is $5,201.03 - $6,340.22. Compensation is prorated based on type and duration of assignments. Individuals newly hired to Adjunct Professor group at the college are placed at the minimum rate per union bargaining agreement. Certain positions may also be eligible for assignment/project-based additional compensation, including a High Demand Stipend up to $8,350 annually, prorated based on the discipline and duration of the assignment. All additional compensations are subject to change depending on funding and negotiated agreement.

About the Department

The Health and Physical Education department includes a Program Manager, Program Chair, full-time and adjunct faculty. The department offers quarterly activity classes (such as volleyball, pickleball) and three certificate programs; Outdoor Recreation Leadership, Personal Fitness Trainer, Yoga Instructor Training. Faculty are committed to promoting inclusive physical education through consistent, fun, and habitual daily movement.

Essential Functions

Typically, part-time faculty teach on campus as dictated by program need, course schedule, and enrollment demand. Most classes meet two days per week. In addition, part-time faculty are expected to be available to students periodically outside of class; to engage students actively in their own learning; to maintain high standards regarding course content; provide students with timely feedback on their course work and examinations; and to adhere to program assessment practices and policies. Part-time faculty may be expected to participate in governance activities to support student success efforts and assessment tasks. All physical education instructors must create a syllabus, use Canvas (college learning management system) for assignments and correspondence, and submit end of term grades.

Copies of all current fitness certifications will be required. Maintaining certification status is required for all instructors (this includes group fitness and CPR CEU's). Instructors will be required to provide and create their own music playlists, be prepared to learn audio or microphone technology with support by the chair.

Minimum Qualifications

• Masters' degree in health and/or physical education
• Knowledge of an application in teaching about seven dimensions of wellness
• Understanding of global wellness practices
• Demonstrated teaching effectiveness in community college setting

Preferred Qualifications

• Documented relevant and successful teaching experience at the community college level
• Knowledge of current curricula, industry development and assessment practices
• Ability and willingness to employ continuous improvement in curriculum, teaching, and assessment
• Willingness to participate in college initiatives/governance
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team
