Position Summary

Reporting to the Dean of Student Life and Leadership, the Director of Housing will be responsible for providing leadership and vision to the Bellevue College Housing department. Department functions of responsibility include residential life; conference and guest housing; occupancy management; academic success initiatives; budget and fiscal management; and short- and long-range planning for additional on and off-campus housing.

The Director of Housing serves in the Student Life Emergency Response duty rotation and supports the operations of the Bellevue College housing department and the student life and leadership unit within the division of student affairs. This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority (CSA), student conduct officer, and member of the CARE (Concern, Assistance, Resource, and Empowerment) team

Pay, Benefits & Work Schedule

Position Salary Range: $90,705/year - $131,522/year

The salary will be determined based on candidate's qualifications and related experience. Typically, new hire starts no higher than $100,909/year based on Bellevue College Exempt salary schedule.

About the Department

The Bellevue College Housing department was created in Fall 2018 when the first-ever on-campus residence hall was opened to serve BC students. The mission of Bellevue College Housing is to provide "safe, inclusive, and educationally-driven living and learning environments to Bellevue College students through quality facilities, academically-relevant support services, and intentional engagement with staff and resources." The LEED-Platinum certified residence hall consists of 400 bed spaces in a suite and apartment-style and includes plenty of community spaces for studying, meeting, and socializing; interior corridor facility with ample community space, a ground-floor cafe, and a front desk.

The Housing department is comprised of the Director, Assistant Director and student staff (6 to 8 Resident Assistants and student desk staff). Each staff members' role revolves around the overall operation of the on-campus community and works to connect the housing operations with services across campus to positively impact the student experience.

Essential Functions

Organizational Strategy

• Provide leadership to and oversee the development and maintenance of a comprehensive, student-centered on-campus housing program.
• Use sound judgement, data, student development theory and emerging student housing practices to guide the development, operations and planning for student housing at Bellevue College.
• Work collaboratively with staff to develop a positive, comprehensive student living and learning experience.
• Create, implement and evaluate yearly department goals, learning outcomes and resident satisfaction.
• Implement institutional, state and federal policies and regulations as they apply to the department.
• Ensure department protocols align with institutional policies and procedures.
• Maintain service equity for all students and visitors accessing services provided by the Bellevue College Housing department.
• Serve as the on-campus student housing subject matter expert for Bellevue College.

Student Engagement and Education

• Foster an engaged and supportive community environment guided by the values of equity, academic success and leadership development.
• Provide and manage adequate resources to department staff to ensure an active and engaged community of residential learners.
• Support and partner with campus and community resources to maximize on-campus housing benefits and learning opportunities for residents.
• In coordination with department staff, advise and/or support residential student leadership organizations and programs.
• Remain up-to-date on emerging practices for residential life programs on college campuses.
• Use data to inform community programming needs and support department staff in the development, revision and implementation of a relevant and comprehensive residential curriculum.
• In collaboration with Student Conduct, Counseling, and the office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, engage restorative practices, case management best practices and trauma-informed approaches to student incident case management.

Administrative Oversight

• Propose, implement, review and manage department budgets in coordination with the Dean of Student Life and Leadership.
• Remain beholden to the fiscal responsibilities of a self-support, bond-debt obligated student housing program.
• Coordinate residential billing and educate residents on payment processes, deadlines and financial resources.
• Support institutional collections and payment processes in collaboration with Finance and Student Financial Services.
• Coordinate capital projects, equipment purchases, maintenance work orders, room turnover cleaning and other facilities-related activities in collaboration with Campus Operations.
• Coordinate the processing of purchasing and service contracts for department.

Staff Management and Team Development

• Recruit, hire, train, develop, mentor and coach director report staff in alignment with Bellevue College Human Resources.
• Support and develop department indirect reports.
• Facilitate annual performance reviews.
• Plan and lead regular department staff meetings, trainings and in-service opportunities.
• Facilitate an environment for direct and indirect reports in promoting professional development opportunities.
• Resolve employee relations issues and conflicts using Restorative Practices and, when needed, progressive discipline.
• Establish an equitable, safe and positive working environment.
• Plan and support the work of department staff and delegate tasks as appropriate.

Communication and Collaboration

• Collaborate and maintain positive working relationships with critical campus partners, including but not limited to Student Engagement, Student Conduct, Title IX, International Education, Athletics, Disability Resource Center, Public Safety, Campus Operations, Food Services, Finance and relevant academic and co-curricular programs serving residential students.
• Engage with, provide feedback on and enforce college policies and procedures.
• Build and support networks and partnerships between students, faculty, staff and administration.
• Communicate effectively with all levels of the Bellevue College community as well as visitors to campus.
• Develop department recruiting and marketing materials, including the housing website, social media and printed documents that clearly communicates the department's functions, protocols, values and goals.
• Support outreach and recruitment activities for the college, division and department as designated.
• Conduct educational workshops, trainings, presentations and other outreach efforts.
• Prepare written reports, including annual department reports, occupancy reports and ongoing budget updates.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

• Master's degree higher education, student personnel administration or related field. Relevant work experience may be substituted for the education requirement on a year-for-year basis.
• Three (3) to five (5) years of progressively responsible professional experience in student housing operations.
• One (1) to three (3) years of experience supervising full-time staff.
• Experience with fiscal management.
• Demonstrated experience supporting diverse students, faculty, staff, and other community members through a lens of diversity, equity and inclusion.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently including organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments.
• Effective verbal, written, and customer service communication skills.
• Demonstrated effective leadership skills including ethics and integrity, problem-solving, conflict management, and decision-making.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office: MS Word, Excel, MS Outlook, PowerPoint.

Position Specific Requirements
This position requires evening, weekend and holiday on-call duties, as well as emergency response to critical incidents in on-campus after hours. CPR/First Aid/AED certification and completion of Title IX, hazing prevention and opioid overdose response trainings will be required within 90 days of hire.

Preferred Qualifications

• 5+ years of progressively responsible professional experience in student housing operations.
• Experience with student group advising.
• Experience with academic programming and living learning programs.
• Experience with student housing occupancy management.
• Knowledge of current and emerging information technology applications relating to student life and housing.
• Experience in physical plant operations including facility construction, maintenance and repair.
