About the Position:

This is a career staff support position reporting to the Director of Public Safety and Security. This position is responsible for receiving and dispatching emergency and non-emergency radio, telephone, and video traffic accurately to the College's security officers and deputies. The Dispatcher monitors the College's alarm systems, surveillance cameras, maintains computerized logs of radio and telephone transactions, monitors scanners and weather radar resources, issues emergency alerts and initiates building lockdowns as appropriate.

Essential Functions/Duties

• Maintains and monitors communication with all College security officers and Polk County Sheriff's Office deputies via 2-way radio and telephone.
• Monitors College emergency phone lines and mobile application notifications, fire, intrusion, and panic alarms, and CCTV cameras throughout the campus.
• Evaluates the severity of communications and alarms and takes appropriate action in both emergency and non-emergency situations.
• Dispatches College security officers and deputies to incidents and alarms for assistance and emergencies.
• Completes Dispatch Logbook of campus events (i.e., communications received and alarm signals).
• Contacts emergency services and coordinates with the same in emergency situations on campus.
• When needed, contact senior administrative personnel in emergencies or when emergency service agencies are called to respond to campus.
• When needed, issues emergency alerts to the College community and/or initiates building or campus lockdowns.
• Provides general campus information to the public.
• Answers inquiries concerning campus Lost & Found operation/items.
• Functions as the primary point of contact (in person or via telephone) for callers and fulfills important public relations function as such.
• Attends appropriate internal and/or external classes, seminars, and training sessions to further develop customer service skills and knowledge.
• Contributes to the overall success of the Safety shift supervisor and the Director of Campus Security.
• Maintains regular attendance.
• Other duties as assigned.

This position is classified as a C16. Please see below for pay range details. Polk State uses experience and internal equity factors to determine pay rate.

• Requires ability to work independently on broader assignments with the responsibility for the planning of work. Makes decisions within accepted standards.
• The ability to establish an effective rapport with faculty, staff and the general public
• Good organizational skills, with special attention to details.
• Good oral and written communications skills. Sufficient oral and written communication skill to effectively speak with callers and prepare job-related documentation is necessary.
• Ability to work well with others.
• Good human relations skills.
• Ability to maintain confidential information.
• Data entry/computer experience is highly desirable.

Working Conditions and Shift Information

• Ability to work on a rotating shift basis is necessary.
• May require work on nights, weekends, and breaks/holidays.

Required Education

• Associate degree or higher in criminal justice, EMS or related field is required.
• Alternate credential: High school diploma with seven years of work experience in law enforcement, security, corrections, EMS, legal work, or related field.
• Certification in CPR and standard First Aid preferred.

Required Experience:

Required Experience

• At least five years’ work experience in law enforcement, security, corrections, EMS, or legal work.
• A minimum of one year of radio communication experience is preferred.
• Documented work experience within a service-oriented organization is necessary; documented work experience within emergency dispatching is highly desirable.
