Job Description

Department Summary:

News & Information Outreach in Spanish (NOS) offers support in communication and outreach to Spanish-speaking communities in California. The group promotes UC ANR's stories and public values through multiple media platforms.

Since 1981, NOS has been a valuable tool to assist in preparing and disseminating research-based information and public outreach to Spanish-speaking Californians. Our goal is to work with you in effectively reaching our state's Latino audiences.

Position Summary:

Independently oversees a comprehensive communications program for a unit or school with moderately complex communications requirements. The communications program usually includes written, visual, digital, and electronic communications. Works with management to develop and execute organizational communication and market branding strategy. Designs and implements information campaigns.

The Digital Communications Specialist in Spanish informs the public about the impacts of ANR research, extension, and education through news writing, video shooting and editing, media outreach, website development, and other communication products in Spanish and English to reach out to the Latino community. Uses skills as a seasoned, experienced public relations and communications professional to produce various communication products in a culturally relevant manner targeting the Latino community.

Supports the development of social media platforms and helps ensure search engine optimization for web communications. Demonstrates a complete understanding of industry practices and organization policies and procedures. Demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions. Maintains expert networking and interpersonal skills, including strong consultative and persuasive skills to work with internal and external constituents; ability to develop and maintain positive working relationships within and across organizational units.

This position is a career appointment that is 100% fixed.

The home department for this position is NEWS & OUTREACH IN SPANISH. While this position normally is based at 4501 Glenwood Drive Riverside, CA, this position is eligible for hybrid flexible work arrangements, for applicants living in the State of California, at this time. Please note that hybrid flexible work arrangements are subject to change by the University.

Pay Scale: $68,400/year to $96,200/year

Key Responsibilities:

70% - Works with academics and other UC ANR personnel, including student interns, to produce a variety of communications products in English and Spanish - news stories, social media posts, videos, podcasts, etc.

Writes news releases in Spanish and English, responds to Spanish media inquiries, and identifies and pitches stories to Latino media outlets to publicize the benefits of UC ANR research and education to Californians. Provides media relations training for UC ANR academics.

15% - Produces content, layout, and information architecture for web pages managed by News & Information Outreach in Spanish (NOS) and Strategic Communications. Ensures technical accuracy, accessibility, and readability of web content. Uses analytical tools to measure and report on web traffic. Supports the NOS team in maintaining editorial calendars, managing projects, and maintaining image and video libraries.

15% - Supports NOS social media strategies in developing and implementing UC ANR's social media strategy to reach and inform the Latino community in a culturally relevant manner.

Requirements:

• Bachelor's degree in a related area or equivalent experience/training (minimum of five years of experience as a professional communicator).

• Bilingual in English and Spanish.

• Photography and videography skills. Experienced in using a professional video camera (e.g., Cannon XF 400) and video and audio editing software (i.e., Adobe Premiere), as well as the use of a smartphone to shoot and edit video.

• Maintains currency with emerging and state-of-the-art technical and other web-related equipment, requirements, developments, general communications trends, and best practices.

• Comprehensive knowledge of and skill in media relations and writing public relations/news content that is culturally relevant to the Latino community.

• Strong interpersonal communication skills.

• Specific skills to develop and implement original ideas and correctly identify and effectively solve problems.

• Understanding of methods and best practices to reach Spanish-speaking and non-Spanish-speaking Latino audiences in California.

• Solid writing and proofreading/editing skills in English and Spanish.

• Demonstrates a complete understanding of industry practices and organization policies and procedures.

Preferred Skills:

• Maintains solid networking and interpersonal skills, including strong consultative and persuasive skills to work with internal and external constituents; ability to develop and maintain positive working relationships within and across organizational units.

• Maintains contact with Spanish media outlets, media professionals, and influencers in California. Analyzes technical/research information and conveys it to the lay audience in an understandable

way. Identifies priority work to communicate about given limited budget and resources.

Special Conditions of Employment:

• Driver's License (U08): Must maintain valid CA DL and clean DMV record to drive a County or University vehicle.
• Ability and means to travel on a flexible schedule as needed, proof of liability and property damage insurance on vehicle used is required.

• The University reserves the right to make employment contingent upon successful completion of the background check. This is a designated position requiring a background check and may require fingerprinting due to the nature of the job responsibilities. UC ANR does hire people with conviction histories and reviews information received in the context of the job responsibilities.

• Travel including travel outside normal business hours may be requested.

• Overtime and occasional weekend work as needed, usually on short notice to meet operational needs may be requested.
