SRNL Fellow Engineer

About Us:
Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL) is a multi-program laboratory applying state of the art science and practical, high-value, cost-effective solutions to complex technical problems to protect the nation.

Located at the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Savannah River Site (SRS), in Aiken, SC, the laboratory develops and deploys innovative technologies to address some of the nation’s environmental, energy, and national security challenges.

Roles and Responsibilities:
The primary focus of this position is the research and development of new/advanced non-destructive examination/testing (NDE/NDT) methods for unique materials and components used in critical applications, such as additively manufactured (AM) parts, spent nuclear fuel containers and nuclear material packages.

Methods to include advanced ultrasonic for materials inspection, microstructural features, and detection of stress-corrosion cracking via phased array (PAUT), total focusing method/full matrix capture (TFM/FMC), guided wave (GWUT), EMAT (electromagnetic acoustic transducer), immersion UT and automated UT methods.

Experience in other NDE/NDT methods such as: radiography (RT), eddy current (ET), thermography, microwave (MWT), and concrete inspection techniques such as: ground penetrating radar (GPR), ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV) and ultrasonic pulse echo is also beneficial.

Candidate will work alongside other SRNL researchers to create novel proposals to address DOE and other funding calls, and help mentor junior staff members with NDE technical challenges.

The candidate will establish collaborations across the DOE National Lab networks, commercial nuclear and other industrial partners to create successful proposals.

The candidate is expected to author internal and external reports, publish in the open literature and effectively communicate experimental results and conclusions to colleagues, management and customers.

Other Duties:
Initiate some technical programs, recognize needs of work group and its customers, take initiative to fill the known needs, develop timely, quality solutions to technical problems, lead task teams to research and develop solutions on key issues.

Apply technical experience in field of specialization or broad-based experience in multiple technical fields, and use other technical resources within the company, to resolve complex problems.

Incorporate advanced technical practices and a variety of complex features such as complicated technical requirements, application of new or special materials or processes and difficult coordination or oversight requirements into problem solving and program planning.

Provide leadership in determining solutions to complex problems and be recognized as having expertise in a functional area(s) of technical expertise.

Develop solutions to complex technical problems in fields of expertise.

Keep informed on technical needs within the company and technical trends in area of expertise in the external world. Be aware of capabilities of the work group and needs of its customers.

Identify technical programs which can be carried out with little guidance and take the initiative to accomplish them.

Lead task teams for developing solutions to more complex problems.

Prepare plans including schedules, budgets and personnel requirements for solving major technical tasks identified by management.

Develop schedules, monitor progress, monitor expenditures of budget and review quality of work performed.

Include research, development, testing, quality assurance requirements.

Communicate the results and objectives verbally and in manuscript form to customers, colleagues, managers and oversight groups.

Prepare reports for external publication.

Maintain expertise through such activities as publishing internal and external technical reports and/or publications and/or involvement in national professional organizations.

Demonstrate creative ability through such mediums as patent disclosures, technical papers and articles and/or utilizing technical skill in contributing to meeting Site missions and goals.
