Platform Engineer

Who we are looking for
As a Platform Engineer, you will help us enable and put to use various elements of our enterprise technology infrastructure – including specialized software and hardware tools and virtualized platforms such as VMWare and the AWS and Azure clouds. You will assist with the adoption of compute, storage, middleware, databases, public cloud and other infrastructure solutions by State Street business applications, using modern configuration provisioning and management tools (e.g., Terraform, AWS CloudFormation, Python APIs). You will also perform various environment engineering and configuration tasks such as testing and configuring infrastructure products, designing Infrastructure-as-Code configuration templates for provisioning cloud infrastructure components (i.e., EC2, RDS, EMR, Lambda, Azure VMs, SQL Server, Functions etc.) in a scalable manner.
What you will be responsible for
Your role is key to ensuring that applications and tools deployed to our enterprise infrastructure are resilient, performant and that our operational SLAs are maintained. You will be an integral member of a dynamic infrastructure engineering team continuously innovating and improving our capabilities to enable the acceleration of State Street’s journey to modern platforms.
What you will be responsible for

  • Develop, deploy, test and document technology solutions/tools that enable business and operational requirements using on-premises infrastructure and cloud services (‘fabric’ or ‘Lego pieces’)
  • Make concepts ‘real’ by telling application architects and developers how things really work at State Street versus what they may have seen in a vendor demo
  • Prevent production issues and outages by implementing scalable and resilient (‘works the first time’) solutions running globally
  • Make things better by pointing out redundancies and manual steps best handled via your code
  • Assist application infrastructure adoption, onboarding and deployment activities with focus on optimizing their technical stack and resource utilization, and on ensuring compliance with internal standards and best practices
  • When appropriate, capture repeatable patterns, solutions, procedures, and patterns in user-facing guidelines and other documentation
  • Effectively engage multiple stakeholders, both internal technical and functional teams, while always striving to increase team productivity and meet delivery targets.
What we value

  • A techie-at-heart, with a good grasp of modern technology infrastructure concepts (computers, networks, storage, databases, cloud), and intuitive understanding of the issues, benefits and challenges involved in enabling infrastructure for the effective and resilient use by software applications
  • Aware of how cloud-centric technologies differ from something that runs on a local Windows server or dedicated Linux server
  • Trained in agile delivery and DevOps concepts and practices
  • A team player and effective contributor with a collaborative mindset
  • Some experience with programming languages in vogue this decade (e.g., Python, Go, Groovy, NodeJS)
  • A passion for learning new technologies, practices and ways of working
Critical Skills/Training:

  • IT infrastructure concepts: overview of servers, VMs, operating systems, networks, storage, HCI, data platforms and middleware - with current examples
  • Networked applications architectures and operating models – traditional 3 tier model, alternatives, scaling, HA/DR, monitoring and logging
  • Operating systems overview and administration concepts – Linux and Windows
  • Basic programming (Python, Java, JS) and command line scripting in Linux or Windows
  • Modern distributed networking concepts – IP CIDR notation, segmentation, firewalls, proxies, etc
  • Agile project delivery principles and practices
  • DevOps concepts and tools
  • High-level IT operating and organizational models
  • Cloud concepts and case studies/examples, with emphasis on AWS and Azure
Education & Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or other degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or related STEM fields
  • GPA higher than the average in relevant subjects and in the last two academic years (if not throughout)
  • Prior experiences / internships with exposure to developing large scale applications
  • Have written apps using AWS or Azure services (a bit more than EC2/VM) is always welcome)
  • Experience with Kubernetes, Docker and other container technologies
  • Previous cloud certifications.
Preferred locations include: Boston, MA; Quincy, MA; Princeton, NJ; Tucson, AZ; Kansas City, MO; Irvine, CA; Sacramento, CA
