We have an exciting opportunity for a Scientific Illustrator to join the Science Visuals team. As part of our award-winning graphics team, the Scientific Illustrator will report to the Graphics Managing Editor and will work closely with the design, photography, and web content strategy teams, as well as with other departments in the Science family of journals. The ideal candidate will not only have strong illustration and design sensibilities but will also excel in translating complex scientific concepts and data into compelling visual pieces.

What You’ll Do
 
·        Create scientific visualizations and illustrations for online scientific journals (Science Translational Medicine, Science Signaling, Science Immunology, Science Robotics and Science Advances).
·        Research and create digital and print visualizations, illustrations and information graphics for the Perspectives and News sections of Science magazine.
·        Participate in the planning and design of interactive graphics.
·        Collaborate with producers to promote our work on the website and social networks.
 
Minimum Qualifications
 
·        Recent graduate with degree in scientific or medical illustration or 2-3 years of experience
·        In-depth knowledge of Adobe CS (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign)
·        Proven design and illustration skills
·        Ability to work closely with editors, writers, and scientists
·        Ability to handle several projects simultaneously, including long-term and daily assignments
·        Ability to visualize complex ideas and scientific concepts in a clear, accurate, and intelligent manner
·        Basic knowledge of statistical data visualization
·        Basic knowledge of a 3D software package (Blender, C4D, Maya…) and molecular visualization (UCSF Chimera) is a plus
·        A solid grounding in basic science education, intellectual curiosity about science, and comfort with scientific ideas is essential
·        Self-starter and reliable content creator with little need of supervision
·        Fast learner, eager to acquire new skills and adapt to technological changes
·        Detail-oriented, organized, and a good communicator
