Apprentice Train Dispatcher

Join our team of Apprentice Train Dispatchers who direct the safe transportation of freight trains throughout our network. In this position you will assess and monitor the movement of trains through varying weather conditions and rail construction projects. This job relies on collaboration to ensure trains move safely, efficiently, and on schedule. Throughout training, apprentices develop expertise in information systems, safety, and transportation operations. We are powered by our people, will you join our team?

Accountabilities


  • Monitor radio and telephones, and communicate with other train dispatchers, train and engine crews, maintenance personnel, and others
  • Direct train movement and determine accurate routing of trains
  • Utilize computers and internal systems to align train movements to meet the current priorities
  • Complete documentation required for train movements, track assignments, and other events
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications


Required
  • A high school diploma or Graduate Equivalency Diploma (GED)
Preferred
  • A Bachelor's degree in in Transportation, Logistics, Business Administration, Economics or Engineering
  • Working experience in railroad operations

Physical Requirements

  • While performing the responsibilities of the job, the employee will spend extended hours in front of a computer screen
  • Must have normal color vision

Work Conditions

  • 18 years of age or older
  • understand that individuals hired to work in this position will be expected to work evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays
  • understand that a 3 year commitment to this position is required upon successful completion of the training program
  • understand that individuals hired to work in this position will be expected to work at their desk for more than half of each work day. Periodic 5-10 minute breaks are allowed, but employees must remain in the building throughout the entire work day.

  • confirm that in the past 36 months, and in connection with the operating of a motor vehicle, you have not had any of the following: (1) the suspension, revocation, cancellation, or denial of your driver's license in an incident involving drugs or alcohol; (2) your participation in diversion or probation, or a guilty plea, in a drug or alcohol-related driving incident; OR (3) you refused to take a drug or alcohol test
