Senior Scientist: Healthcare R&D Intellectual Property and Open Innovation Manager
 
We are looking for a strong technical integrator with experience in or a willingness to learn IP/Patent processes. In this Health Sector (Personal Healthcare [PHC] and Oral Care [OC]) role, you will work with the highest priority internal and external development teams to identify, evaluate, and protect key inventions. Success in this role results in delivery of IP strategies and internal/external partnerships that build P&G’s patent portfolio and exclusivity for Healthcare products.
 
The Manager will have broad project responsibilities across both PHC and OC technology programs to co-create and influence the strategic direction of research. They will partner across R&D, Brand, Product Supply and Legal functions to optimize development and patent filing strategies.
 
You will also be the steward of multiple Category patent portfolios. In your portfolio manager role, you will work to maximize the value and breadth of existing patent assets, work with senior management to propose abandonment or licensing of assets which are no longer a fit with PHC or OC business strategies. You will continue to build the IP culture within the R&D and Brand organizations via relationships, process optimization, and development of state-of-the-art training modules leading to sustainable competitive advantage.
 
Has Healthcare responsibilities to monitor competitive activities as well as evaluate and leverage, capabilities, technologies, and products of external companies for consideration by Marketing, Finance, Purchasing and R&D according to the needs of the business. In addition, a C+D manager can influence the development of new products and product categories enabling growth of sales and market share. To facilitate engagement with potential partners (external), protect the business and increase competitive advantage, the Manager ensures that the proper agreements are in place prior to in-depth discussions and partnerships.
 
Job Qualifications
    * PhD in Science or Engineering with 0-5 years of experience
    * Experience with or interest in intellectual property preferred. Examples include:
         + Inventor on patents related to scientific inventions
         + Drafting a patent application
         + Drafting a licensing agreement
         + Developing and presenting a patent strategy
         + Identifying and presenting opportunities for innovation
         + Critical evaluation relevant art including patents and scientific literature
    * Experience managing budgets and patents for a patent portfolio
    * Experience interpreting and negotiating contracts is a plus
    * Ability to critically evaluate legal contracts
         + Attention to detail
         + Strong reading comprehension
    * Experience with asset evaluation or mergers and acquisitions are a plus
    * Strong written and verbal communication skills
    * Ability to clearly summarize complex technologies/strategies in verbal and written form
    * Experience with product development
    * Experience building relationships and managing conversations/negotiations with various internal (P&G) and external partners
    * Ability to critically evaluate literature (patent, scientific literature, news, clinical studies, regulatory guidance) related to products/technologies
    * Experience with information databases and software preferred. Examples include:
         + Chemical Abstracts/SciFinder
         + Medline
         + Orbit
    * Strong integration skills
    * Work process optimization and rigor (IP strategies, IP reviews, documentation of decisions)
