Environmental Specialist

Job Summary
This position exists to assist project staff with project sites/activities in the East Metro Unit of the Remediation Division. The primary focus of the East Metro Unit is to implement actions necessary to respond to PFAS releases in the east metropolitan area of the Twin Cities. This includes assisting with environmental investigations, actions and projects identified under terms of the PFAS Settlement Agreement between the State of Minnesota and 3M, where response actions are necessary. This work includes the collection and determination of appropriate actions to address PFAS impacts to public and private drinking water supplies.

This position will be responsible for assisting senior staff with implementing approved projects under the terms of the PFAS Settlement Agreement between the State of Minnesota and 3M, and the Drinking Water Supply Plan developed for the east metro area of the Twin Cities. This position will also assist senior project staff with the planning and collection of drinking water samples from private wells in the east metro area, providing results of samples collected to home owners, and data management for residential well sampling and other environmental assessment projects conducted under terms of the Settlement Agreement.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Geology, Soil Science, Biology, Chemistry, or related field
  • OR Two (2) years of professional-level environmental protection experience.
  • In addition:
  • Demonstrated strong technical writing skills.
  • Basic computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Word and exposure to Microsoft Excel and Microsoft PowerPoint.
  • Ability to gain a complete understanding of the environmental regulatory process and procedures.
  • Communication and human relations skills to interact effectively with stakeholders and team members.
  • Problem-solving skills to successfully resolve technical matters and bring projects to conclusion.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated understanding of local government organizations.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of waste and sustainable materials management.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of state remediation and, environmental and/or public health risk management policies, rules and regulations.
  • Database use, development and/or management, and data collection/analysis
  • GIS/GPS experience/training
  • Ability to consult effectively with local officials and maintain productivity in controversial situations.
  • Familiarity with environmental sample collection.

Physical Requirements
Requires driving to and from inspections. Requires the ability to perform field work, sometimes in adverse weather. Field work and inspections may include traversing stairs and rough terrain, and some moving of sampling equipment.

Additional Requirements
A driver’s license is an essential function of this position. This requires possession of an unrestricted Class D Driver’s License. The job offer is contingent on confirmation of a valid driver’s license AND a satisfactory driver's license record check.

Requires a Class D driver's license: a single unit vehicle with a gross vehicle weight of less than 26,000 pounds. This is a basic driver's license. Operators may also tow vehicles/trailers as long as the gross combination weight does not exceed 26,000 pounds.
