This role in summary

 
 
Whirlpool is currently seeking a qualified candidate for an Senior Equipment Controls & Testing Engineer opening to join our Central Manufacturing Engineering Group (CME) in Ottawa, Ohio.
Whirlpool is looking for an experienced Equipment Controls & Testing Engineer with a strong background in manufacturing operations. As part of the Central Manufacturing Engineering Group, the successful candidate will work closely with Ottawa manufacturing location, Engineering & Technology, Advanced Manufacturing and our new product organization to define, coordinate and manage the acquisition of the necessary capital equipment to successfully manufacture and deliver winning new products to the marketplace. This will cover coveted brands such as Whirlpool, Amana, Estate, KitchenAid, Maytag, and Jenn-Air. 
The successful candidate will be at the forefront of developing new Refrigeration products by providing manufacturing early design consultation services, while determining the anticipated impact to the existing manufacturing footprint, including establishing the early capital budget estimates. 
The Equipment Controls & Testing Engineer will be accountable to acquire and manage the associated capital equipment for new products from conception through to formal production handoff at the selected manufacturing location of choice.
As the CME Equipment Controls & Testing Engineer you will be accountable for supporting new process and product integration by providing manufacturing expertise to each of the key functions.
 

Your responsibilities will include

 
•   Working closely with the Ottawa manufacturing location to define controls and test architecture of capital purchases
•   Utilizing World Class Manufacturing (WCM) Early Equipment Management (EEM) methodology and tools to plan, design, develop, build, install and startup of assets into our Ottawa Manufacturing location
•   Responsible for the scoping through implementation and vertical start-up of all assigned capital assets
•   Interact with project management and development teams to develop a strong understanding of the project and testing objectives
•   Design and create test conditions and scripts to address business and technical use cases
•   Specifying through implementation and handoff of new equipment to manufacturing operations
•   Improving speed in which we deliver winning products to the marketplace
•   Ensuring that new manufacturing processes are flexible in design to accommodate long range new product cadence plans with the intent of minimizing future capital requirements
•   Working closely with the Advanced Manufacturing Group to ensure that new processes are in compliance with the established Global Bill of Processes
•   Leading projects and special assignments as required
 
 

Minimum requirements

 
•   Bachelor’s Degree in an Engineering Discipline 
•   3+ year(s) of manufacturing experience 

Preferred skills and experiences

 
•   Knowledge of electronic controls including robotics, servos, linear drives, PLCs, variable frequency AC drives, DC drives, distributed IO, Ethernet I/P networking, CIP motion, SERCOS, and hard wired controls
•   A strong understanding of the regulatory environment surrounding equipment controls and electrical safety. This would include NFPA, NEC, ANSI, OSHA, and ISO to name a few
•   At a minimum, a basic understanding of equipment safety as it relates to machinecontrols. This would include dual channel, pulse testing, diagnostic coverage monitoring, common cause failures, and assessing risk as a developmental tool for safety-related parts of a control system
•   In-depth knowledge of controls for manufacturing processes such as complex fabrication lines/cells that contain forming, piercing, bending, welding, robotics, etc
•   Experience in new product introductions, including the direct planning and acquisition of the associated capital equipment
•   Lead in the creation, documentation, updates, and training of test requirements and strategies for all new projects
•   Work closely with Design Engineers to prioritize and manage completion of test activities related to new product launches
•   Validate testing activities and results of new manufacturing equipment
•   Understand communication protocols used to communicate with board level diagnostics. This may include WiFi, Bluetooth, or serial connections to name a few
•   Understand the impact and requirements of different regulatory agencies. These include, but are not limited to, Underwriters Laboratories (UL), the Canadian Standards Association (CSA),the Association of German Electrical Engineers (VDE and TUV), and the International Electro-Technical Commission (IEC)
•   How to safely perform testing in regards to EN/UL 60335
•   Understand the periodic calibration and verification of test equipment in addition to the documentation requirements of the different regulatory agencies
•   Strong development/scripting skills in common languages like VB, JAVA, and C++
•   Understand database creation and scripting in SQL Server
•   Knowledge of Ignition Server Software including implementation and maintenance
•   Knowledge of CCB2 scripting and WIN/WIDE communications protocol is a definite plus
•   Basic understanding of hydraulics, mechanics, and pneumatics is required to apply the above electronic knowledge
•   Lead / Support project teams to design for test to enable better test coverage and discrimination
•   Validate Measurement System Repeatability and other measurement system attributes required per project
•   Support development of global testing strategies
•   Strong understanding of Lean Manufacturing concepts
