Attorney - Civil Litigation

General Duty Statement
Positions in this class perform a wide variety of very complex professional legal work at the full performance level in the City of Saint Paul City Attorney's Office to include prosecuting criminal cases, representing the City and City employees in civil litigation, and providing general legal services to various City departments, divisions, offices, authorities, boards, commissions and committees; and performs related duties as required.

Information related to this position:
This position involves litigation of a wide range of civil actions including civil rights, land use, contracts, employment and various tort claims. The successful candidate must:
  • Conduct legal analysis of standard and complex civil actions initiated against the City of Saint Paul, city employees and elected officials.
  • Develop sustainable litigation strategies for a variety of pending and threatened civil actions.
  • Represent the City of Saint Paul, city employees and elected officials through all phases of civil litigation in state and federal district and appellate courts.

Requirements
Candidates for positions as an Attorney will have at least a Juris Doctorate Degree and a license to practice law from the Supreme Court of the State of Minnesota and at least three years of experience as an Attorney at the entry to intermediate level with the City of Saint Paul or equivalent. Preferred candidates will be admitted to practice in the U.S. District Court and the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals.

Continued employment as an Attorney is contingent upon maintaining such licensure.
Ideal candidates will have three years of civil litigation experience. Qualified candidates must have strong writing and communication skills, a demonstrated ability to maintain consistent professionalism, and a license to practice law in Minnesota.
