Job Description
The Tucson Mining Center serves as the primary hub for design, sales, and technology within Caterpillar’s Resource Industries Operations and Products (RIOP) Division. At the Mining Center, we house our core product design and development of surface mining equipment – including large mining trucks, hydraulic mining shovels, electric rope shovels, draglines, and digital mining solutions.
Caterpillar’s RIOP Division is currently seeking a Control Electronics Engineer for the electric rope shovel product line. In this role, you will use your knowledge of engineering principles and leadership skills to establish strategy, develop proposals, and lead innovative programs to advance the state of the art in machine control and automation. You will architect controls hardware and software solutions to meet customer specifications while ensuring the solution is scalable, maintainable, and upgradable. You will continually learn and stay abreast of innovative technology, develop as a strategic thinker, and deepen your professional network.
Job Duties:

  • Deepen knowledge base of Caterpillar’s products, technologies, processes, services, and systems
  • Develop multi-generational technology plans and project proposals
  • Lead and execute programs to complete objectives in the design and maintenance of the control system
  • Communicate results to global customers, suppliers, team members, and other business units
  • Responsible for the system architecture of the control system for automation, reliability, and productivity technologies
  • Facilitate requirements elicitation, scope drawing creation, and review equipment specifications
  • Develop relationships and collaborate with suppliers and process partners to ensure ideal technology selection and strategic alignment
Basic Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in engineering or computer science.
Previous technical research, internship/co-op, or relevant experience.
Top Candidates will also have:
Master’s degree in engineering or computer science.
Effective communication skills, both written and oral.
Functional knowledge of control system architecture and network design.
Experience with machine control design, protection, and sequencing utilizing PLCs and ECMs.
Experience in PLC hardware and software, particularly Siemens S7 PLC and WinCC Visualization.
Experience with ECM hardware and software, particularly Matlab Simulink and C++.
Familiar with AutoCAD Electrical and CREO.
Strong initiative and self-starter with good organizational skills to work on multiple projects with competing priorities.
Electronics system integration experience.
System-level performance, controls, and simulation experience.
Machine testing experience collecting and analyzing data.
Mining industry experience, particularly with shovels.
