Magazine – Writer / Writing Intensive Internship – Winter Break 2021/2022

Magazine – Picture This Post WRITER, Two-Week Writing Intensive – Winter Break 2021/2022– 30 hours TOTAL – within a 10-21 day window – INTERNSHIP

Picture This Post magazine, www.picturethispost.com, alerts time-strapped readers to cultural offerings that are the best match for their interests in art, books, dance, film, museums, music, theater, as well as travel with a focus on culture. We not only cover culture creators and venues with high name recognition, but also delight in helping to showcase bold, creative strokes by fledgling artists in all genres.

Please Note: ALL Picture This Post editors and writers are volunteers—from top to bottom.
There is not a paid internship opportunity.

Applicants for a Winter 2022 Picture This Post Review Writer Internship who complete this TWO -WEEK Writing Intensive are short-listed for acceptance as a Review Writer. If your school allows, the hours from this WRITING INTENSIVE will be applied to winter internship requirements made by your school.

Supervision:

Amy Munice, Editor in Chief, will be the primary supervisor of your internship.  She is the co-publisher of the magazine, a 30+ year PR professional and freelance journalist, and cultural reporter who has penned many hundreds of articles.  She will be the author of your future reference for job hunting purposes.

You will be responsible for keeping a to-do list updated in real time, and a cumulative report- -which if possible, we would prefer you also share with your school internship supervisor.

Training sessions are held by zoom—usually in small groups—throughout the week and weekend.  Initially you will need to adapt your schedule in order to attend training sessions for your role in the soonest possible timeframe.  Once you have the prerequisite skills, you determine your schedule each week in order to meet your school’s hour requirements for your internship.

ALL VOLUNTEERS – ALL REMOTE WORKERS:

Picture This Post is an entirely volunteer organization, from top to bottom.  We are a not-for-profit (as opposed to a 501c3 non-profit) – too small to hire accountants etc. needed for non-profit status.  Students are like all volunteers EXCEPT that much time/energy goes into training students and helping you develop a portfolio for future job hunting.

Picture This Post uses a very description-rich writing style that aims to give readers a vivid mental picture of the film, play, festival, performance, etc. being reviewed. It is unlike the style you are trained to write in at school and unlike traditional criticism you may read in newspapers or other magazines. Rather, this is an opportunity to learn writing skills such as: how to convey point-of-view without making the review about you; how to be conscious of word choices; how to edit yourself; etc. By mastering the “Picture This” style, you will develop a better understanding of Writers’ Guidelines in general.

Before you apply, please read this introductory chapter of Picture This Post Writers’ Guidelines.

Your first review will be a film review from a trusted source of high quality films. For example, click a picture in this story to read a review:

Your initial story/s will be a trial balloon. Read this description please—

Note- only 1 out of 5 review writer applicants “pass” the trial balloon in their first attempt. Only 1 out of 10 do not wish to do a second trial balloon. You are the major judge of whether you “pass”- meaning, you are able to ink a review in 24 hours after an event that is so close to the guidelines it can be edited into a final without any back/forth with the review editorial team.

After the trial balloon is completed to both you and editors’ satisfaction, you may opt to continue writing film reviews or venture into other areas of content that Picture This Post covers: art; dance; music; theater; books; museums. Every story you write will be extensively edited before publication.

The WRITING INTENSIVE also includes:

-training in layout

-access to our writer/editor communication system geared to accelerate your training

-your responsibility to write social media post language for your published story/s

At the conclusion of this writing intensive period, you should have 3 – 10 “inked” reviews to add to your resume; you will have access to the Picture This Post review opportunity automation for writers to find future review opportunities.

Note: Future writing assignments—after this writing intensive training—are not on any schedule—you only write a review on topics you are interested in and only take on assignments when you have time. (Of course, if your school stipulates specific hours etc for a subsequent internship, you must report these on a weekly basis.)

This position is an excellent opportunity for anyone interested in honing their writing skills, and for initial exposure to how an online magazine works.
