CDC Microbiology Fellowship

CDC Office and Location: A research opportunity is currently available with the Clinical and Environmental Microbiology Branch (CEMB) in the Division of Healthcare Quality Promotion (DHQP) at the National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases (NCEZID) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.
The Clinical and Environmental Microbiology Branch (CEMB) is the laboratory branch in the Division of Healthcare Quality Promotion (DHQP). The mission of DHQP is to protect patients; protect healthcare personnel; and promote safety, quality, and value in both national and international healthcare delivery systems. The Built Environment Ecology and Technology team (BEEaTs) in CEMB is seeking applications for an ORISE Fellow. The BEEaTs team performs laboratory research using novel technologies to advance our understanding of the built environment.
Research Project: The fellow will join the BEEaTs Team in CEMB to contribute to ongoing research projects, specifically the detection of non-tuberculous mycobacteria and antibiotic-resistant bacteria on surfaces using nanoparticles and a nucleic acid bait-and-capture system.
Learning Objectives: The fellow's training opportunities will include surface sampling, DNA extraction, PCR, and assistance with next generation sequencing. The fellow will gain experience collaborating with other teams and branches within DHQP and in communicating findings with CDC colleagues and public health partners.

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: January 2022. Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.
Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.
Level of Participation: The appointment is full-time.
Participant Stipend: The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience.
Citizenship Requirements: This opportunity is available to U.S. citizens, Lawful Permanent Residents (LPR), and foreign nationals. ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.
