Laboratory Technician I

Desert Research Institute’s (DRI”s) Division of Atmospheric Sciences in Reno, Nevada is seeking applications for a Chemist Laboratory Technician I. This technical position will conduct analysis of particles collected on filter samples for ionic and elemental species by properly operating and maintaining ion chromatography (IC) and inductively couple plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) analyzers.  In addition, the Laboratory Tech I will perform miscellaneous laboratory and sample handling tasks. The Environmental Analysis Facility is an analytical chemistry laboratory supporting air quality research. 
 
Specific job functions will include but not limited to the following:
  • Analyze filter samples by IC and ICP-MS and perform routine maintenance following SOPs.
  • Review initial analysis data for anomalies.
  • Prepare samples for analysis by extraction or acid digestion
  • Order and maintain inventory of laboratory supplies; prepare and ship unexposed filter media.
  • Check-in received samples, create run lists, label samples, archive samples, and keep excellent laboratory records.
  • Monitor equipment and instrument performance; perform routine calibration and maintenance as needed.

Required Qualifications
  • A high school diploma and at least 2 years experience in an analytical laboratory.
  • US Citizenship.
  • Experience operating, maintaining and calibrating delicate laboratory equipment.
  • In-depth knowledge of analytical chemistry
  • Ability to analyze and interpret scientific data; demonstrated organization and documentation skills.
  • Competent in laboratory procedures, ability to follow analytical procedures with excellent attention to detail.
  • Knowledge of computers and software applications including MS Windows, MS Word, and MS Excel.
  • Ability to accurately and completely follow directions and produce detailed and accurate documentation. 
  • Ensure all safety protocols are strictly enforced and practiced
 
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in chemistry.
  • Experience with ion chromatography and ICP-MS analysis methods.
  • Experience performing calibrations and troubleshooting analytical laboratory instrumentation
 
 
Conditions of Employment

  • Ability to perform physical tasks of moving or lifting objects up to 30 lbs. and standing for long periods of time.
  • Use of chemicals, glassware, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), and gas cylinders are required.
  • Must pass safety training during orientation.

 

Salary/Benefits

This is a DRI Technologist position Grade 27 with a starting minimum starting salary of $36,583. Candidates will be hired at the level that is comparable to their experience, skills, and abilities.
