Cartographic Technician II

Under direct or general supervision, provides Geographic Information Systems (GIS) support to an interdisciplinary team of government and GIS professional experts. Performs a wide variety of cartographic assignments using geospatial data, GIS hardware or software. Perform technical, developmental, and maintenance tasks related to GIS and geospatial activities in support of the Yuma Proving Ground. Insures accuracy in the interpretation and revision of maps, the inclusion of new or changed information, or compliance with rules and regulations. Requires working with functional area subject matter experts to develop spatial data. Maintains or modifies existing GIS databases. Coordinates data exchange, data conversion, and data imports. Performs basic spatial analysis, creates spatial data and associated metadata to support customer requests for GIS data development, analysis, charts, reports, graphics, and maps. Assists efforts in research, analysis, and the evaluation of requests for new GIS applications and functionality. Creates hard copy map products and tracks GIS service requests. Designs, builds and publishes web maps, map services, image services and feature services. Operates and maintains large scale plotters, trimmers, laminators and scanners. Other requirements include geospatial field data collection. Performs other duties as required to complete the assigned mission. This position is covered under the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Education/Licenses/Certifications/Experience Requirements:
 
  • Must have an associate’s degree or higher in Geographic Information Systems, Engineering, Computer Science or a related field
  • 2+ years of experience with the Esri ArcGIS for Desktop suite, especially ArcMap and/or ArcGIS Pro and working knowledge of ArcGIS Extensions – 3D Analyst, Spatial Analyst, Network Analyst, Data Reviewer, Publisher.
  • Must have knowledge of mapping and cartographic concepts, mapping symbols and standards, GIS concepts, mathematical concepts, basic database principles.
 
Job Skills Requirements:
 
  • Good understanding of spatial data, spatial data types, coordinate systems and projections.
  • Experience with geospatial data collection, analysis, and/or conversion.
 
Physical Requirements:
 
  • Must pass a pre-employment drug screening and physical and periodic retests.
  • Must be able to wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for work tasks assigned.
  • Must be capable of working in extreme weather conditions including summer temperatures peaking around 120 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Must be able to visually distinguish colors.
  • Must be capable of sitting and typing at a computer for extended periods of time. 
  • Must be able to lift 25 pounds unassisted.

Additional Desirable Qualifications:
 
  • 3+ years of experience working with the Esri Desktop suite and working familiarity of Portal for ArcGIS.
  • Experience working with Google Earth, AutoCAD or other GIS software.
  • Experience working with the DOD, military, or test and evaluation community.
  • Experience with enterprise GIS database support, maintenance, management, and versioned editing. 
  • Excellent problem solving skills.
 
Terms of Employment & Eligibility Requirements:
 
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen and not hold multiple citizenships.
  • Must possess or be able to obtain a security clearance prior to employment and maintain security clearance for the duration of employment.
  • Must be a current TRAX employee or affiliate subcontractor for internal postings.
