CDC Scientific Fellowship Program Development Initiatives

CDC Office and LocationTwo research opportunities are currently available in the Division of Scientific Education and Professional Development (DSEPD), Center for Surveillance, Epidemiology and Laboratory Science (CSELS) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.

Research Project: The fellow will participate in projects and activities in support of CDC scientific fellowship program development and expansion within the Division of Scientific Education and Professional Development (DSEPD). The remainder of the fellow’s activities and training will depend on their professional interests and goals, experience, and skills. Under the guidance of the CDC mentor (DSEPD's Associate Director for Program), fellow activities will include:

Hiring Improvement Initiative: Over the past year DSEPD has taken focused steps to improve the communication, collaboration, and operations involved with the various CDC partners, and CDC’s human resources offices to ensure long term job opportunities for DSEPD’s graduating fellows throughout CDC. The fellows are dedicated, experienced, and trained in epidemiology, laboratory services, program management, economics, and informatics. The selected participant will:
  • Participate in the expansion of the current pilot program and identify opportunities to improve and expand communication, division collaboration, partnerships, and operations.
  • Monitor and evaluate the newly created jobs portal linking program graduates to CDC programs.
  • Contribute to site administration, user feedback collection, and basic system improvements for the jobs portal.
  • Conduct data analyses, generate reports, and contribute to the development of an executive level dashboard to monitor and track data within the jobs portal.
  • Participate with their CDC mentor on DSEPD’s intra-agency fellow hiring workgroup as it relates to the hiring improvement initiative with HRO and DSEPD leaders.

Fellow Program Expansion: DSEPD’s fellowship programs are a critical pathway to CDC epidemiology, emergency management response, laboratory safety and data modernization staffing needs and requirements. DSEPD is currently undergoing a significant expansion in the size and scope of our programs including the formulation of cross functional teams combining work and activities within DSEPD for the first time. DSEPDs Associate Director for Program is expanding to accommodate the management and tracking of centralized programmatic, operational, technology, and overall project management to execute this work. The selected participant will:
  • Participate with health communications staff in developing and designing marketing tools (e.g., presentations, newsletter articles, and other program promotional content) to promote DSEPD programs and innovative tools.
  • Participate with their CDC mentor to develop new processes and tools to increase vertical and horizontal integration across functional areas of DSEPD program operations.
  • Participate with their CDC mentor to refine, implement, execute, and communicate program operations strategy within DSEPD. Identify programmatic activities that support this goals and objectives of the program operations strategy.
  • Collect and analyze data and generate reports.

Learning Objectives: By the end of the fellowship, the participant will be able to:
  • Develop and implement effective communications and communication strategies
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of a data system
  • Collect, aggregate and analyze user feedback and other data for a data system
  • Describe workforce development initiatives
  • Develop marketing tools (e.g., presentations, newsletter articles, and other program promotional content)
  • Develop new processes and tools to improve program operations
  • Identify activities that support this goals and objectives of effective program operations
  • Generate program operational reports

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: October 2021.  Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.

Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.

Level of Participation: The appointment is full-time.

Participant Stipend: The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience.

Citizenship Requirements: This opportunity is available to U.S. citizens only.

ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.
