Genetic Counselor

Summary:
Provision of genetic counseling service in both traditional clinical genetics and cancer risk genetics service line - assessment, development of pedigree, identification and coordination of testing including prior authorization, report production, pre and post test counseling, communication with referring providers, and community education.
Responsibilities:
PEOPLE
1. Demonstrates effective and courteous Customer, Physician/Practice Staff, and other hospital staff communication skills. Answers all calls promptly and courteously. Responds to and resolves issues promptly through effective communications. Uses appropriate chain of command. Feedback is provided in a constructive manner.
2. Participates in problem solving groups as requested.

SERVICE
1. 100% documented evidence of attendance of staff/department meetings, and/or reading/initializing minutes, memos, and postings.
2. Assist in diagnosis of known or suspected genetic disease:
3. Review available medical records, request additional records as required
4. Conduct literature search as required. Coordinate appropriate sample of collection as required. Review information with clinical geneticist.
5. Gather family medical history information and draw pedigree. Identify pertinent issues/risk factors.
6. Discuss medical information about a disorder. Explain hereditary contribution, inheritance pattern, and risk probabilities. Explain options for testing.
7. Discuss emotional aspects of family situation, provide support (grief, anxiety). Facilitate decision-making process with family.
8. Provide follow-up counseling as required (assist with interpretation of test results. Refer when appropriate.
9. Summarize information collected and discussed with family during counseling visit and send to referring physician. Briefly summarize telephone conversation(s) in patient's chart.
10. Develop patient education tools for use in sessions, develop and implement educational opportunities for appropriate groups.
11. Provide consultations for healthcare professionals regarding difficult cases or testing/referral options.
12. Provide support for other office personnel as needed.

QUALITY
1. 100% compliance of: iCARE, (complete annually at least seven days prior evaluation), Employee Updates, and any other in-services, meetings and training as assigned
2. Participates in QI program(s) as appropriate.

FINANCE
1. Assist Practice/Office Manager with Grant writing and reporting.

Education:
Essential: Master's degree in Genetic Counseling or related field with experience in Clinical Genetics
Working conditions:

* Work with computers, typing, reading or writing.
