Hot Cell Engineer

A Hot Cell Engineer is responsible for the equipment and procedures that support the handling and examining of spent naval nuclear fuel within a shielded cell or "hot cell". This includes preparing for and executing the receipt, installation, testing, checkout, and maintenance of Government Supplied Equipment. Extensive interface with test exam sponsors and equipment designers located at the Bettis and Knolls sites is required. This also includes the design and procurement of support equipment. A Hot Cell Engineer will be responsible for providing deliverables to an overall project plan while meeting all naval nuclear program requirements and standards. Direct product line support includes responding and correcting both equipment and procedure deficiencies in an operational environment. Typically work is day shift with occasional shift work to provide engineering support during examinations. After an initial training program, the engineer will be assigned a mentor to provide guidance on direct product line support. Engineers will be required to qualify as a Radiation Worker, Engineer of Radiological Work, Engineer of NRF Work, and Engineer of Environmental Work. 

Intermediate/Advanced

Perform engineering evaluations and analyses, and make engineering decisions for all aspects of assigned tasks. Cognizant areas may include planning, designing, modeling, analyzing, documenting, and testing of nuclear, mechanical, structural or electrical components, systems and equipment and facilities. Work may include chemical or materials evaluations, design reviews, operations support, safety analysis, engineering methods and software development, and analysis of vendor's procedures and systems for quality control or manufacturing surveillance.
 
Required Skills *

Intermediate:
  • BS degree in engineering or Bachelor's degree in a science related field from an accredited college or university and a minimum of two years of relevant experience; or
  • MS degree in engineering or Master's degree in a science related field from an accredited college or university and a minimum of one year of relevant experience; or
  • Currently or previously EOOW qualified in the Nuclear Operations Program; or
  • SRE Qualification
 
Advanced:
  • BS degree in engineering or Bachelor's degree in a science related field from an accredited college or university and a minimum of four years of relevant experience; or
  • MS degree in engineering or Master's degree in a science related field from an accredited college or university and a minimum of two years of relevant experience; or
  • Currently or previously NPE qualified or CTE/ACRS and one year of EOOW in the Nuclear Operations Program; or
  • Watch Instructor and Refueling Facility Area Refueling Engineer and one year as SRE

Preferred Skills

Electrical Engineer familiar with motion control systems, troubleshooting equipment in remote environments, modification of equipment/systems for a remote environments, preferred. Other desirable qualifications include:
  • Mechanical, Materials, or Chemical Engineering
  • Demonstrated Project Management
  • Leadership experience with diverse teams
  • Experience in the Naval Nuclear Power Program or DOE Facility
  • Shipyard or plant operations,
  • Examination Techniques such as Optical Microscopy, Helium Leak testing, Gamma Spectroscopy, and Metallography are desirable.
  • Other related experience with Radiological work.
