Staff Assistant

SALARY: $3,654 - $4,383/mo.

Position Description
Staff Assistant is a class assigned to assist and support various City departments. Depending upon assignment, responsibilities may include assisting and supporting in: program development and operation; finance; personnel; processing statistical information and operational data; and public or media relations.
 
The best qualified candidates for the current assignments will demonstrate: good customer service skills; excellent computer and reporting skills; and general clerical support of management. These positions are best suited for self-starters who organize priorities well, maintain deadlines, and have confidence to problem-solve.
 
Three vacancies currently exist in multiple departments of the City with varied assignment duties. Immediate and future vacancies will be filled from this eligible list for a period of six (6) months from the date the eligible list is created, with the option of extending that period at the City's discretion. If the examination process is suspended for this recruitment, the eligible list may be limited to three (3) months.
 
Pay, Benefits, & Work Schedule

The Requirements
Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications on or before the posted filing deadline in order to qualify for the examination and does not assure a place on the eligibility list.
 
A High School diploma or GED and completion of thirty (30) semester units of accredited college or university course work in public administration, political science, business administration, mass communications, accounting, or a closely related field; AND one (1) year of administrative support experience which emphasized budgetary review and control, personnel management, office management, or public and community relations.
 
Substitution: One (1) additional year of qualifying experience may be substituted for the required college education.
 
NOTE: A copy of degree or college transcripts must be uploaded and included in your on-line application for verification of requirement. Applicants lacking the documentation may be rejected if relying upon education to meet the Minimum Requirements.
 
The selected eligible candidates certified will be required to successfully pass a Department interview and a Department of Justice fingerprint prior to employment with the City of Fresno.

Selection Process
The examination process may consist of the following: 
 
Written Exam: 100%: A job-related written examination may be administered which would test a candidate's knowledge of office practices/procedures, computer software, data collection and research, media/communications, personnel management, local governmental structure, budgeting, interpersonal and customer service skills, and performing mathematical computations. Candidates must achieve a passing score to qualify for the eligible list.
 
The written examination has been tentatively scheduled for the week of: August 16, 2021.
 
Veteran Preference Regulations
Candidates applying for veteran's preference are required to submit a copy of their DD214 with their application during the specified filing period. Evidence must be presented to indicate that the candidate was discharged honorably from the military service. Veterans, including City employees, must resubmit proof of honorable service for every examination for which veteran's preference credit is requested. Qualified veterans who pass the examination will have five (5) points added to their final score.
