Associate Director of Development, NY and Latin America

The Nature Conservancy
Position Profile

Associate Director of Development, NY and Latin America

Have you ever asked yourself, “How can I make a difference?”, but you don’t know where to start? Welcome to The Nature Conservancy. You have found the solution and now you can make a difference every day—for New York, Latin America, and the World!

The Nature Conservancy is looking for an individual with fundraising or business development experience who wants to make a difference for nature and people. The Conservancy is a global conservation leader and one of the top fundraising charities in the United States.

This is an exciting time at The Nature Conservancy as we pass the successful closing of the final phase of a $7 billion global campaign. That success has pushed us to learn and grow with an eye to the next campaign. The Conservancy has an expanding portfolio of Major and Principal Gift donors in the NY Metropolitan area that we are ready to engage. The Nature Conservancy also seeks to test an assumption that there are a significant number of Latin American nationals living in the US as well as significant high-net-worth Latinx donors who would be interested in supporting the Conservancy’s ambitious conservation agenda. To this end, The Nature Conservancy leadership has concluded that there is merit in investing over the course of 2021 in developing a more comprehensive fundraising strategy targeting Spanish-speaking communities in the NY Metro Market that may also have ties to Miami and facilitating engagement with Spanish-speaking communities in other markets.

The Associate Director of Development (ADoD) will identify and engage new individual prospective donors who are currently affiliated and unaffiliated with The Nature Conservancy and seek to motivate them to invest in the Conservancy’s conservation mission. They will develop qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies for a portfolio of donors interested in supporting the Conservancy’s conservation efforts globally with a special focus in Latin America and in collaboration with the Conservancy’s executive, conservation, and fundraising leadership and with the Conservancy’s network of committed board members, donors, partners and friends including the Latin America Conservation Council. The donors managed by the ADoD will require sophisticated relationship management, a high degree of knowledge of assets and ownership structures, and an expert understanding of the factors influencing philanthropic giving. They will focus on long-range strategic priorities and be responsible for donor strategy and proposal development, working with conservation and development team members, as well as donors, to create transformational giving opportunities. They will be required to travel when necessary including Miami, and other occasional travel domestically in the US as well as internationally to key Latin American markets.

Our team is strategic and ambitious, and we have fun as we build strong, impactful relationships between the Conservancy and the leading individual donors, foundations and corporations. We are looking for smart, entrepreneurial, and emotionally-intelligent go-getters who can manage and foster solid relationships externally and internally for lasting success.

The ideal candidate will have a background and track record that includes:
·    Fluency in both English and Spanish (written and oral) and possessing requisite cross-cultural experience.
·    Bachelor’s degree and 7 years related experience.
· Demonstrated experience in cultivating and ultimately stewarding the development of a pipeline of new donors.
·    Experience building and maintaining long-term relationships with constituents such as major donors and  corporations.
·    Experience in asking for and closing six to seven figure gifts.
·    Experience in managing and tracking multiple prospects and donors.
·    Experience working with fundraising principles and practices.
·    Experience, coursework, or other training in current and evolving trends in chartable giving, particularly in the areas of capital campaigns, major gifts, and planned giving.
·    Experience working proactively and independently while seamlessly communicating with a team of professions across multiple time zones.
·    Experience maintaining confidentiality of frequently sensitive and emotionally charged information.
