Job Summary:
The Assistant Director of Development Communications at the University of San Francisco (USF) has the primary responsibility of writing and editing original content about USF in alignment with strategic marketing and fundraising goals to help build a culture of philanthropy and cultivate philanthropic donations leading to long-term engagement and commitment from alumni, families, employees, students, and friends of USF. USF's Changing the World From Here Campaign has been transformative, and the Assistant Director of Development Communications will play an integral role in telling the story of the success of this campaign and building a bridge to future campaigns.

Reporting to the Director of Development Communications, this position is a key member of the USF Development Communications team and will assist in the implementation of USF's Development Division marketing vision and strategy in alignment with USF's values of diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Full Job Description:

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

The Assistant Director of Development Communications will primarily be responsible for writing web content, feature news stories, fundraising copy for print and digital materials, stories of philanthropic impact, and other copy as needed. This position will also work with the Development Communications team on targeted digital marketing and donor engagement projects to support engagement and revenue goals for the university.

Key responsibilities include:

● Collaborate with Development and institutional colleagues in the creation, design, and production of news stories and web content in alignment with Development Division and University of San Francisco fundraising strategy and goals

● Create and manage writing projects from inception through delivery, targeting key audience segments as determined by the overall Development Communications marketing strategy

● Manage special projects as assigned by the Director of Development Communications, such as long-form or short-form web content, marketing copy for alumni engagement, social media content strategy, and other fundraising collateral

● Provide copy editing and proofreading across the Development Division to ensure alignment with university style guide standards and brand voice, as needed

● Model best practices in writing, and review messaging and communications written by others outside Development Communications

● Collaborate with colleagues across the Development Division and the university community to deliver marketing and communications plans and projects that align with university and fundraising goals

● Other responsibilities and tasks as assigned

Qualifications

● Bachelor's degree

● Five or more years of professional experience in communications, with specific experience in writing for higher education or nonprofit audiences

● Two or more years of experience independently managing and editing writing projects

● Experience in digital marketing strategies and best practices

● Exceptional writing and editing skills, with the ability to quickly find the heart of a story and its supporting facts

● Strong project management skills and ability to work independently to meet deadlines

● Experience in conceptualizing and designing copy to reflect distinct voices and to appeal to various constituencies

● Ability to work effectively and collaboratively across teams to meet deadlines

● Excellence in written communication and editorial skills, including grammar, style, syntax, and copy editing

● Commitment to marketing and communications with a social justice and equity lens, with an understanding of USF's diverse student, alumni, and donor populations

Preferred Qualifications

● Experience working in higher education or nonprofit

● Experience working in a capital fundraising campaign

● Experience with design software

● Proficiency with web content management systems, email marketing software, social media
