Skills Trainer - Adult Mental Health Initiative

This is a full-time position working at 30 hours per week, Thursday - Saturday, 8:00 AM - 6:30 PM. The position is located at Rita May Manor, a residential facility in Southeast Portland near Gresham. 
The Skills Trainer for Rita May works as a member of an interdisciplinary team to implement and monitor treatment for residents living within the residential facility based on each individual's service plan. The Skills Trainer facilitates group and individual treatment and personal care related activities in the program as well as out in the community, with a focus on promoting independence.

Rita May is a seven-bed residential facility serving adults living with Severe and Persistent Mental Illness (SPMI) as well as other complicating medical/physical conditions. Individuals typically require guidance in dealing with illnesses such as diabetes, COPD, seizure disorders, and cardiac problems. Careful compliance with specialized dietary and exercise requirements, medical monitoring, and coordination with primary care providers and medical specialists are provided for the individuals who reside in Rita May's homelike setting.

Essential Duties:

  • Provide therapeutic interventions for residents as directed by the mental health treatment plan
  • Provide individual and group skills training and meet productivity standards.
  • Provide supervision and support to residents in areas of self-care. I.e. hygiene, housekeeping, meal preparation, use of public transportation, community integration, and social skills.
  • Coordinate with current shift staff and upcoming shifts staff regarding resident concerns, follow-up actions and program needs. Requires the review of electronic documentation and written communications from previous staff and check in with program leadership.
  • Accompany residents to, and assist residents during various types of appointments, outings, activities, etc. in the community. Requires the use of a company vehicle, potentially a van or small bus.
  • Perform household chores daily based on set schedule, including but not limited to, light housekeeping and cleaning of biohazards. Possibly assist in meal set-up, preparation, serving, and clean up related to meal times or cooking group activities.
  • Document and maintain clinical records in a manner that assures compliance with all agency policy and procedures and local, state and federal regulations through use of Electronic Health Record System (EHR).
  • Adhere to compliance, required laws and trainings, safety of property and staff, regulations, I.e. Mandatory abuse reporting laws and HIPPA, fire regulations
  • Participate in all scheduled staff meetings, supervision sessions, and other departmental and agency meetings.
  • Assist in crisis situations and with de-escalating residents that are in crisis or experiencing significant struggles; follow emergency protocol and procedures including utilization of non-violent crisis intervention and de-escalation techniques (I.e. Pro-Act)
  • Complete annul employee training requirements in order to understand how to conduct ethical work, for professional development, and stay in compliance
  • Report program/building and vehicle issues or concerns to program manager.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
  • Must meet the requirements and demonstrate the competencies to be credentialed as a Qualified Mental Health Associate (QMHA). Must have a Bachelor’s Degree in a behavioral science field from an accredited college or university or three years of mental health work experience or a combination of work experience and education. Certification must be current and in compliance with MHACBO
  • Experience working in a residential mental health setting or similar setting is preferred.
  • Experience providing skills training types of services is also preferred.
  • Proficient written and verbal communication skills
  • Advanced knowledge of culturally specific services
  • Knowledge of Trauma Informed Care, Motivational Interviewing, and Evidence Based Practices
  • Understanding of Recovery Model, Illness Management and Strength based philosophies
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (I.e. Word, Power Point and Excel)
  • Ability to prepare simple reports and have basic Excel skills
  • Operate computer programs and systems at a level needed to perform the essential duties. I.e. EHR
  • A CPR Certification is required and must be maintained; training for the certification is provided post hire.
  • Ability to pass a DMV check; possess a valid driver’s license, three year driving history, and a clean driving record is required.

Working Conditions
  • Environmental: Work is generally performed in a residential setting and out in the community. Universal precautions should be taken due to exposure to disease, bio-hazards, noise and contaminants.
  • Operating Hours: The program operates 24/7. This Skills Trainer generally works daytime hours, 8:00 am to 6:3 pm.
  • Mental: Meal periods and breaks are subject to interruption. Regularly remaining aware and alert is critical to detect and address escalated, potential volatile situations.
  • Physical Demands: Regular ability to sit or stand depending on the task to support client care. Ability to regularly move about the facility space to complete task and engage with clients. Regular moments of documentation at a computer and typing up daily notes. Ability to ascend stairs; there are three levels at this site. Must be constantly aware and alert, be able to detect the surroundings, and communicate clearly with consumers and co-workers.
