The role:
Our Engineering and Technical Services Branch is recruiting for a corrosion engineer to join our Bridge Preservation and Design Unit! In this role, you will provide technical expertise for design, construction support, operation and in-service inspection and evaluation of:
- Cathodic protection systems for corrosion protection of concrete coastal bridges.
- Concrete repair projects involving electrochemical systems.
- Bridge deck corrosion protection systems.
- Steel coating systems.

The goal of this recruitment is to fill this position at a professional engineer 1 level. However, we encourage candidates who meet the minimum qualifications for an associate in engineering 2 ($4,495 - $6,909 monthly) to apply, as we may consider underfilling the position until the selected candidate acquires a professional engineer's license. Underfilling will not exceed 18 months.

A day in the life:
- Participate on project teams, representing the Bridge Engineering Section and the Engineering and Technical Services Branch.
- Prepare plans, specifications, cost estimates and lifecycle costs for complex cathodic protection and coating systems for coastal bridges, bridge coating projects and other unique corrosion projects.
- Maintain record of calculations and provide bridge cost data for projects.
- Collaborate with the CAD technician and work with drafting and design software.
- Provide construction engineering support to resident engineers including reviewing and approving contractor submittals and design changes.
- Provide training for construction inspectors on corrosion protection systems.
- Maintain data on structures, develop and use performance measures, provide reports and make presentations for preservation programs.
- Research new methods and materials to prevent or reduce corrosion damage to bridges and propose research projects to evaluate promising concepts.
- Provide designers with corrosion protection requirements for structures in corrosive environments.
- In collaboration with a corrosion designer, provide a Coastal Bridge Survey Report every five years, including an evaluation of corrosion damage to bridges and recommendations for projects.
- Assist maintenance crews with corrosion consultation and quick fix repairs.
Environment:
- Work is primarily performed in an office environment (85%) with occasional statewide travel (15%) for inspection of construction projects and field inspection of existing bridges required.
- Corrosion program support and construction engineering support requires working close to traffic and using a snooper crane, man-lift and fall protection equipment.
- May be required to walk on rough terrain, stoop or bend around structures or equipment and work 20 feet or more above ground/water at project sites.
- Access to a confined space may be required several times per year and access to construction enclosures may be required monthly.
- Use of hearing protection and respirator use will be required in construction enclosures.

What we need:
A valid professional engineer's (PE) license in civil, structural, electrical, chemical, mechanical, metallurgical, or corrosion- or transportation-related engineering.
Note: If registered in another state, successful applicants will be required to obtain professional registration in the state of Oregon within six months of hire.
Driving is an essential function of this position. You must possess and maintain a valid driver license and acceptable driving record (also required for the underfill option). Your license does not have to be issued in Oregon to be considered.
What we need for the associate in engineering 2 underfill option:
Completion of and passing score on the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam and one year of experience applying professional engineering theory, principles and methods.
To be eligible for the associate in engineering 2 underfill option, a candidate must have passed the PE exam at time of application and the candidate must have their valid PE license (the ability to stamp) within 18 months of hire.

- Experience with Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, MicroStation and MathCAD.
- Experience working with construction contractors on time sensitive, high value projects.
- Experience producing project packages (plans, specifications, and estimates).
- Familiarity with bridges and bridge terminology.
- Familiarity with ASTM test methods, ODOT specifications, and Association of Materials Protection and Performance (AMPP), previously known as NACE and SSPC, standards.
