CDC School-based Surveillance Fellow in Adolescent Health

*Applications will be reviewed on a rolling-basis.

CDC Office and Location: A research opportunity is currently available with the Division of Adolescent and School Health (DASH), National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention (NCHHSTP) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.

CDC, through its Division of Adolescent and School Health (DASH), promotes environments where youth can gain fundamental health knowledge and skills, establish healthy behaviors, and connect to health services to prevent HIV, STDs, and unintended pregnancy.

DASH is a unique source of support for HIV, STD, and unintended pregnancy prevention efforts in the nation’s schools. DASH works to protect and improve the health of youth by:
  • Collecting and analyzing data that drive action.
  • Translating science into innovative programs and tools that protect youth.
  • Supporting a network of leaders in primary prevention by funding education agencies that reach nearly 2 million students.

DASH is committed to preventing HIV, STDs, and pregnancy among all youth. Taking a school-based health promotion and disease prevention approach to adolescent health, the division builds strategic partnerships and works to prepare healthy youth for a successful future.

Research Project: CDC DASH’s work encompasses a variety of protective and risk factors that influence sexual health outcomes, including mental health, violence victimization, and high-risk substance use. Under the guidance of a mentor, the selected participant(s) will have the opportunity to contribute to research and evaluation efforts supporting HIV, STD, and unintended pregnancy prevention programming in schools, as well as related programming focused on adolescent mental health, violence prevention, and high risk substance use. Specifically, the fellow(s) will gain experience collaborating with CDC staff to: (a) design and implement analytic plans analyzing data on adolescent health from complex sample surveys (e.g., Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System, School Health Profiles) and/or panel data, (b) disseminate key findings from data analysis through scientific journal articles, presentations at national and regional scientific conferences, and translation materials; (c) support CDC staff with the provision of technical assistance on school health services (i.e., sexual health, mental health) to local education agencies (LEAs; i.e., school districts), and/or (d) develop scientifically informed tools and materials to support CDC/DASH’s program activities, including school health services.

Learning Objectives
  • Identifying gaps in the scientific literature on adolescent health, school health, and school health services, and designing data analytic plans to address those gaps;
  • Analyzing data to identify key findings and practical recommendations for DASH programmatic work with schools and health services;
  • Sharing findings from data analyses through the development of peer reviewed manuscripts, presentations to scientific audiences, and CDC reports and translation documents;
  • Collaborating with CDC staff and other national experts on the provision of technical assistance to school districts, schools, and schools’ partners (e.g., school-based health clinics, community-based organizations).
