Post Doc in Cellular Tomography

Brookhaven National Laboratory (www.bnl.gov) delivers discovery science and transformative technology to power and secure the nation’s future. Brookhaven Lab is a multidisciplinary laboratory with seven Nobel Prize-winning discoveries, 37 R&D 100 Awards, and more than 70 years of pioneering research. The Lab is primarily supported by the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Science. Brookhaven Science Associates (BSA) operates and manages the Laboratory for DOE. BSA is a partnership between Battelle and The Research Foundation for the State University of New York on behalf of Stony Brook University.
Organizational Overview
The mission in the Biology Department at Brookhaven National Laboratory seeks to unravel and fully describe the complexities of biological systems - from how plants make oils and other products to the role of proteins in disease.
Position Description
The Brookhaven National Laboratory has openings for Postdoctoral Research Associates to carry out technology development and scientific research projects in the area of imaging biological processes to understand biological complexity for bioenergy. Scientific topics of the project include, but not limited to, metal homeostasis and stress resistance, lipid biosynthesis and metabolism, plant-microbe interactions, and plant cell wall structure and biosynthesis. The incumbents will work closely with scientists from the Biology Department, National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II), Laboratory for BioMolecular Structure (LBMS) Cryo-EM facility, Computational Science Initiative (CSI) as well as Yale University. The positions are two-year term and may be extended to three years contingent upon satisfactory performance and continued funding.
This project will utilize the state-of-the-art Brookhaven Lab facilities NSLS-II on X-ray imaging, CFN (Center for Functional Nanomaterials) on light microscopy, LBMS on electron tomography, and CSI on advanced computational infrastructure and algorithms. NSLS-II is a world-leading synchrotron facility that produces high-flux, and low-emittance X-rays for solving a wide range of biological problems via diffraction, scattering, and imaging capabilities. CFN explores the unique properties of materials and processes at the nanoscale supported by the operation of high-end instruments from material fabrication and characterization to theory and computation. LBMS provides imaging capabilities for studying biological structures and processes at sub-nanometer resolutions. The integration of lights, x-rays, and electrons as imaging tools will allow for studying transient biological structures and processes at an unprecedented resolution.
BNL offers competitive compensation commensurate with relevant experience and qualifications. Candidates should submit a CV, a brief description of research interests, and contact information for three references.
Position Requirements
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Prepare biological tissues and cellular samples for imaging data acquisition and analysis.
  • Develop sample handling tools and protocols for integrated multi-scale imaging data acquisition using light microscopy, x-ray and electron tomography.
  • Develop optimized methods and procedures to mill tissue and cell samples for electron tomography.
  • Document and disseminate research results through publications and presentations.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Ph.D. in biophysics, chemistry, biochemistry, physics, bioengineering, plant biology, cell biology, or a related field.

  • Demonstrated publication record in a peer-reviewed journal.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and effective interaction in a team environment.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Experience in using a confocal light microscope such as Leica TCS SP5 and Olympus IX81.
  • Familiar with x-ray diffraction or imaging data acquisition at a synchrotron beamline.
  • Experience in using a transmission electron microscope such as Titan Krios, Talos and JEM2100F.
  • Experience in the development of instruments and protocols toward automation.
  • Skills in shell scripting and programming.
  • Experience in using a cryoFIB for electron tomography.
  • Experience in gene expression in mammalian cells, Tabacco leaves, Arabidopsis, or other land plants.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and diplomatically.
  • Self-motivated.
