Tier II Student Technician
Position Overview
The Tier II Student Employee provides intermediate to advanced technical support across networking, systems engineering, and data center operations. Acting as the first line of assistance for partner IT and Research, this role builds on Tier I fundamentals by incorporating hands-on infrastructure management, server patching, and performance tuning. The position requires strong technical aptitude, ownership of complex tasks, and seamless collaboration with engineering teams to maintain and troubleshoot enterprise-level systems in a high-stakes environment.
Key Responsibilities
Systems & Server Support
- Assist with server deployment, configuration, patching, and upgrades
- Support system performance tuning, monitoring, and troubleshooting
- Assist with backup, recovery, and disaster recovery processes
- Participate in system migrations and lifecycle management
Network & Technical Support
- Troubleshoot network connectivity issues (remote and in-person)
- Configure and deploy network devices (switches, routers, wireless)
- Support endpoint systems across Windows, macOS, and mobile platforms
Data Center Operations
- Perform moves, adds, and changes (MACs) for infrastructure equipment
- Monitor and maintain DCIM systems and perform audits
- Support power, cooling, and rack capacity management
Customer Service & Collaboration
- Respond to tickets and communicate via phone, email, and in person
- Collaborate with IT staff, vendors, and campus customers
- Maintain documentation, procedures, and asset records
Minimum Qualifications
- Enrollment in at least 6 credits with a minimum 2.0 GPA
- Strong communication and problem-solving skills
- Basic knowledge of operating systems and networking (TCP/IP)
- Ability to maintain professionalism and follow security policies
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with system or network administration
- Familiarity with server environments (Windows/Linux), virtualization, or storage
- Knowledge of networking protocols (DNS, SMB, HTTP)
- Scripting or programming experience (Python preferred)
- Experience with technical documentation
Work Environment
- On-site role supporting campus IT infrastructure and data centers
- Combination of hands-on technical work and desk-based support
- Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs
- Must be able to work a minimum of 16 hours per week during the semester and must be able to work close to the maximum 40 hours during the breaks.
- Must be able to work within 8 am to 5 pm with some exceptions outside of normal working hours. Work schedules may vary to meet the needs of the university.
